ThunderClan

This place wasn't a place for ThunderClan anymore it seemed. There hadn't been a battle over this rocky shore in recent memory and the ownership of the land was as unclear as ever. Although padding easily over the rocks now she could distinguish the smells of both River and Thunder. Perhaps they might as well share these rocks now, since no one had ever won them over for long.

Pale eyes slide to the side, her limping steps slowing to a crawl, to watch the river and the brush bordering it. It was easy enough to imagine that a patrol was there or nearby, she was here after all, even if she was alone. But the thought that keep intruding was the dark, familiar face of her brother. Over there somewhere, helping to lead another Clan. Although if she was being honest with herself that didn't bother her. He had had no reason to stay here, other than loyalty the logical side of her brain added.

The brown tabby shock away the intrusive thought. She knew she would never have done it. No matter how miserable she was. But, for her families sake, and to help vanquish the sudden loneliness that keep her awake at nights, she was trying to understand them in a more emotional standpoint. Not because anyone asked her to, because StarClan knows she had always been oblivious or downright disdain of 'weaker' emotions, but because lately she couldn't sleep. Closing her eyes brought guilt, a longing for some kind of connection. And how better to have that with then family?

Her lips pressed into a thin line of displeasure as she thought of ThunderClans last meeting. Her casual attempt at a friendship conversation with her younger half-sister had been meet with silence. A rebuff she had more then half expected.Their family was twisted up wrong thanks to their father, something of which she didn't care about or blame him for until recently. Now it was all she could think about during the few moments she allowed herself a rest form her duties, normally those rest where far and few between.

Settling back onto her haunches Spottedlegs lifted her broken, front left paw. It had been positioned with twigs, grass and webs used to bind them and her paw in place. It worked well enough, but with ThunderClan out of healers she only hoped it healed properly enough on its own now. But it was the reason the older warrior had been forced to give up her duties. Her responsibilities. Everything that she was and thrived to be was on hold, and all because some eager young warrior had been trying to impress her.

Ears flattening at the memory she lifted her eyes to stare out over the water.

RiverClan

Cedarheart padded with a slow, deliberate silence. His mentorship of Matchapaw was off to a solid start, though the apprentice had other duties for the time being. He was taking the opportunity to find his own sort of solitude out here by the ThunderClan border.

From here, he could see the towering heights of their great trees and the way that the canopy occluded the skies. He wondered what it would be like for those cats, living without the stars constantly shimmering over their heads. Here they saw it; a reminder of their loyalties and duties with every clear break between night clouds. The thought brought the young deputy some peace of mind. A strange consideration, he realized, given that even now he was enjoying the gentle warmth of afternoon sunlight on his pelt.

Sunningrocks lay ahead of them, the mingled scents of ThunderClan and RiverClan both so clear in his nose that he realized an outsider would find the two indistinguishable. It was not a secret that both Clans continued to use Sunningrocks for their own means, despite border markings by the other Clan, but an actual battle had not broken here for some time. Cedarheart wasn't keen on sharing territory; it went against their codes, but the two Clans also hunted different prey and ThunderClan did not practice fishing from the river here as they did.

He supposed if ThunderClan cats should choose to sunbathe here, he at the very least would not have the first unsheathed claws about it.

StarClan apparently read minds, given the loyalties of the white-and-tabby she-cat who lay in wait across the smooth stones. True to expectations, she was simply lost in thought as she lounged. One paw seemed to hover over stone as she relieved it of her body's weight. He could see the injury bound in cobwebs and felt a flash of sympathy. for her. "Spottedlegs," he greeted politely.

Crouched back on her hindpaws and bathed in sunlight as she gazed over the river, Cedarheart could see the lines of her face and shape of her eyes; Spottedlegs bore a striking resemblance to her brother in some ways. He moved stepped smoothly over the rocks but kept a respectful distance from the injured ThunderClan cat. "As healing as swimming can be, I wouldn't recommend it here." Sunningrocks was as close to neutral territory as he could entertain, but the river was clearly not.

ThunderClan

Her pale eyes had fallen to the river at some point and her thoughts drifted away on its current, living behind nothing but slow, peaceful drifts of ideas and tasks she would need to catch up on when her paw was better. Combined with the heat soothing over her shoulders and the tabby she-cat felt a spread of sleepy warmth creep over her, causing her body to sway and her eyes to flutter closed. Just a moments rest before a not-so-familiar voice rumbled her name.

Her reaction was violent and instantaneous, considering where she was, and her mind hadn’t yet connected the idea that the voice’s owner knew her name, which meant they knew her. On some level at least.

The ThunderClan warrior spun and spat, hackles raising and lips curling back into a snarl, but just as quickly she stumbled away when she pressed forward onto her injured paw. Spottedlegs yelped and flung herself back onto her rump, hissing now with pain and warning as she darted a quick glance up at her opponent… One of RiverClans deputy’s. Although not the one who had consumed her thoughts of late. The surprise made her jaw drop and her green eyes widen slightly, it wasn’t easy to catch the stern warrior off guard.

And all too quickly she composed herself, scanning the area for more RiverClan warriors, and raising cautiously to her paws. Keeping her bandaged one tucked against her chest once more. The pain there still throbbed and ached fiercely but she ignored it in favor of registering what Cedarheart had said last, pinning her ears against her skull. “As if,” she growled. Even if she wasn’t sporting an injured paw, the ideas was ludicrous! What would any cat, besides those in RiverClan, want to swim for? The idea of being soaked all the time chilled her. “Besides, why would I need to?”

Cedarheart's ears flattened briefly in surprise, though it wasn't terribly apparent other than flinching back from the she-cat's aggression. She'd gone from staring dreamily out over the river to hissing and spitting in a heartbeat. He supposed it was only fair. Although they were vaguely familiar with each other through Hollowfrost, the pair of them had never spoken on their own and they certainly weren't friends. It was a complex situation and an understandable reaction, even if it felt extreme in the moment.

"I'm not attacking an injured cat," he meowed calmly, tucking in his hindquarters to sit on the warm stone some distance from the ThunderClan cat. The look of surprise in her own eyes was admittedly more funny than he'd expected from her. His whiskers twitched as he tried not to laugh. Everything about her so far had seemed very extreme. He wondered if she was like this with her own Clan.

She wasn't friendly as she spat a retort back at him and the RiverClan deputy found himself caught between sympathy for her obvious pain and confusion for her lack of understanding. "Does ThunderClan not-... No, I suppose you wouldn't." The question broke off into a self-directed murmur, the cinnamon tom tilting his head. "RiverClan has always used the river as a part of healing our Clanmates," he explained to her. "It doesn't put pressure on our legs and paws to swim, and the water soothes our pain. It didn't occur to me that ThunderClan cats wouldn't do it, but I still wouldn't suggest trying it here if you did: your paws would bump on the rocks."

The handsome tom watched her closely for a moment. Now that he was closer, he could see the way that she favoured her injured paw. Most warriors he knew would walk off an injury. Obviously she'd been quite badly hurt for her to cradle it so against her body. A slight frown creased his brow. Hollowfrost wasn't going to be pleased hearing about this.

ThunderClan

Other then the thinning of her lips she managed to keep her face expressionless, a talent she'd always prided herself with. Although of late her control over the unfeeling facade was slipping and she couldn't help but blame herself, the restless nights and work-exhausted days had left her with little energy to hide herself behind her normal wall.

Since seeing Hollowfrost at the Gathering, after so many moons thinking he was dead she'd been flooded with guilt and regret, over how she'd treated him and how much she'd let her fathers views and watchful eyes manage her life. Her relationship with her sisters was no better. Distant, something caught between strangers and sisters. Never quite friends.

Spottedlegs watched the cinnamon tom settled down onto the stones and followed suit, flicking her slender tail over her paws. But the tension didn't leave her shoulders. Regardless of how relaxed he appeared, or how friendly, he was still a cat from a rival clan. Although of what she knew of him and what she'd seen herself, Cedarheart wasn't the type to harm injured cats.

"That is an interesting custom," she replied, her voice calm now. To the point of coldness. "Does Hollowfrost participate in it as well?"

Her own question surprised her, but she was careful not to let it show. The handsome deputy had seen enough theatrics from her for one day, certainly more then she'd care for a stranger to see! Though she was curious for whatever answers he was willing to give, eager for whatever she could learn about her brother. Of course Cedarheart had no way of knowing that his fellow deputy had relations in ThunderClan, unless of course he had confided in him, but Spottedlegs had no way of knowing that. Realizing this she felt a new tension sweep over her. What was he to think? With her asking personal questions about someone she didn't know, at least that he thought she didn't know!

The ThunderClan warrior's demeanour was a stark contrast to the defensive fury he'd already borne witness to. She was eerily still and very guarded. Some of ThunderClan's cats remained on relatively friendly terms with he and his Clanmates, but honestly it was WindClan who seemed to stay on stable ground with them. The relationship between RiverClan and ThunderClan would probably never be as stable as theirs was with WindClan.

Spottedlegs was still staring at him. Her reply was ice cold, though the words themselves seemed to betray her interest. He wasn't sure if he liked where her interest was, either. Hollowfrost's reaction to meeting his sister and father at the Gathering had been far from confident and collected. Luckily, his answer in either case was only testament to his strength. "Not that I'm aware of. I don't know if he's ever had that kind of injury," he said.

Cedarheart simply looked back, unsure how to respond to her coldness. "Your brother's a strong cat." He wasn't sure where that came from, or entirely convinced if it was a comfort or a warning. "He's well-liked as our deputy, whatever he might have been in ThunderClan."

She was distant enough from him to leave him on strange footing. At least with his Clanmates there was an underlying level of trust in their loyalty. With Spottedlegs, he wasn't sure if she spoke with concern for her littermate or anger for a perceived slight to her Clan.

ThunderClan

She cast a thoughtful frown away as he spoke, unable in those moments to hold his gaze for fear that the strange whirlwind of emotions in her chest would shine through her eyes. The same emotions that had been keeping her awake these past nights, since learning of her brothers new life in RiverClan.

Everything their father had taught them wanted her to be angry, ashamed even that a ThunderClan warrior would abandon his home and loyalties for another clan. The fact that he was a deputy there wasn't an honor, but a slap to the face to his birth clan. And yet those feelings were at war with a sister who wanted to take back every mean thing she'd ever said to him, every slight and cold shoulder.

And with those feelings, something she'd never realized before, came loneliness.

The tabby warrior snapped out of her thoughts and drug her eyes away from the river and back to his direct gaze. "He wasn't appreciated enough," she admitted, her voice had lost it's cold edge but now it seemed to lack emotion of any kind. "I know he is. Any child of Foxscar would be." Spottedlegs hesitated a moment before adding, "but I am pleased to hear he is doing well."

She shifted on her warm perch, setting her paw down lightly. A healthy reminder that it was broken still and throbbing from the pressure she'd put onto it earlier. Ignoring that pain was getting easier, though she supposed that wasn't a good thing. Pale eyes flickered towards the water once more. Remembering the custom the deputy had mentioned that his clan participates in. "Where would you recommend a ThunderClanner soothing pain, if not here?" She raised her injured paw with the question, reluctantly curious. "Perhaps you would show me this place, if it exists, and tell me about Hollowfrost."

It was a bold question. Not only asking for another clan Deputy to show her some of his clans customs, but asking that he tell her more about his co-deputy. And certainly a risk she too was taking on herself, if she misjudged him in any way she could end up dead. The she-warrior fell back into silence as she watched the cinnamon tom, gauging his reaction.

She wouldn't meet his eyes now, and he wondered vaguely what she hid from him. It wasn't his business, and he doubted either she or Hollowfrost would thank him if he pried her for the answer. Hollowfrost wasn't fond of his old family, but he was a noble sort of cat all the same. He'd probably rather Cedarheart didn't harass his sister out of misguided curiousity. Cedarheart himself had to agree with that respect for her privacy. He didn't follow her gaze as she looked away from him.

When she was ready to speak, she turned back and her words felt empty in his ears. The only emotion he could catch was regret, and even that was possibly imagined. He didn't think he'd ever know if Spottedlegs honestly missed her brother, but he decided it was best to assume she did. Littermates didn't often dislike each other to that extent. "He's happy," he assured her.

There was a surprisingly easy silence between them for a moment, and then Spottedlegs lifted her injured paw to him. Her admission wasn't one he'd ever expected from her. Cedarheart realized that admitting her discomfort, especially to a warrior of another Clan, wasn't something that she'd have done easily. He hesitated, feeling at war with himself. He'd mentioned the custom in hopes that it would help her, but to actively aid her in seeking a place to do so seemed more intimate than was right between rival Clans. Loyalty as deputy to RiverClan... or personal loyalty to Hollowfrost?

His softer nature won out. "The river slows a few minutes downstream," he said finally. As long as they kept to their respective sides, it should be fine. He started back to the rocky soil of the riverbank, flicking his tail in a gesture for her to follow as best she could. There was a small part of the river there where ThunderClan cats sometimes gathered to drink on hunts and patrols. RiverClan sometimes watched them from the safety of the reeds, keeping an eye on their rivals. It was the only part of their river that he could pass off as shared with ThunderClan, at least outside of their temporary truce over Sunningrocks.

Cedarheart was mindful not to set a quick pace, but even so it would be a relatively short trip. No, the harder part for him was ensuring that he stayed in line of sight with the tabby. Reaching the point where the river widened, it was obvious that the water flowed more slowly here. The sandy bottom was more easily seen through the water, not carried off by harsh currents. Scatters of leaves and debris floated leisurely past. Cedarheart took little notice of it as he strolled in off the bank. The water was colder below the surface, but he was used to that. He kept going, sinking almost up to his shoulders before he stopped and feeling the force of the water buoy him up onto the tips of his paws.

"Spottedlegs?" he mewed, pale green eyes watching for the she-cat on the opposite bank. He quickly caught sight of her. "It's shallow here," he told her. "You'll be able to stand without swimming, but you'll have to get deep enough that the water carries your weight." What was he doing? He prayed silently that his Clanmates didn't walk in on this, because it probably looked much worse than it was.

He's happy. She repeated those words in her mind a few times, believing them. Glad that, away from his horrible family, Hollowfrost had at last found some measure of peace in his life.

An old tension in her shoulders seemed to ease a little and she relaxed further onto the sun-warmed stones. But the new tension her questions seemed to cause forced the injured warrior to shift again on the rocks, watching Cedarheart struggle with the decision she'd placed on him. She expected him to turn her down, after all if anyone were to stumble upon them they could both get into trouble and if she was being honest with herself, which she usually was, she knew she wasn't at all comfortable with the notion of leaving Sunningrocks with the RiverClanner.

But he seemed willing to answer the questions she had about her brother. Things she was to scared to ask of him herself, because she highly doubted he would want to speak with her. If their roles had been reversed Spottedlegs wouldn't have had wanted anything to do with her sibling.

When he finally answered she blinked back at him, barely concealing her surprise. But she rose and followed, carefully picking her way over the rocks while she filtered through her mind for all the ways in which she and her brother could become closer, if not in person but at least through the knowledge she could gain from this stranger.

Spottedlegs was jerked from her thoughts when he spoke her name, both startled and embarrassed to hear it spoken with such familiarity. Her father and sister were the only cats whom she often conversed and even then, her name wasn't actual spoken. Hearing it was always strange.

Peering back into his eyes, the color so like her own, she felt her lips tilt downward in thought. The water wasn't so deep she supposed, she wouldn't need to rely on her swimming abilities. A good thing considering she couldn't swim at all. Giving the cinnamon tom a nod she wade into the water. Visibly wincing at the cool tug against her spotted legs. Her belly. And then her sides, but her managed to keep her paws on the river floor.

Her injured paw raised, the undercurrents flowed around it. Weightless. Soothing. As Cedarheart had promised. The pain at the broken joint still throbbed irritably, but the pressure icy cold of the water had eased the worse of it. "It's working," she admitted, surprise in her voice.

"So," she managed to bite out against the cold. "does he have, friends? family? in RiverClan?"

Cedarheart watched as the she-cat slowly padded into the shallows. He caught the slight upward tilt to her head as she moved, instinctively keeping her head high, and he caught the quiet purr of amusement before it was audible. That made more sense for actual swimming, but Spottedlegs wouldn't have had the experience to tame the reflex.

Still, despite the cool of the water and the ThunderClan tabby's instinctive fear of it, she seemed to relax once the river had lifted the weight from her injured paw. The cold would help, too. He watched in silence as he expression slowly changed. There was some mixture of surprise and relief in her eyes, much to his approval. He sat down, enjoying the gentle flow of the current. "I'm glad," he replied.

After a moment, she seemed to have remembered her other intentions: quizzing him about Hollowfrost. There was an anxious twitch of his ears as he thought about what was safe to tell her. Nothing critical to their Clan's safety, for sure, but some things were reasonable enough to share between Clans. One cat he knew was likely safe regardless. Superpaw was more than capable of managing herself. "He has a daughter," he said hesitantly: "Superpaw. She's one of our older apprentices."

"And he's close with some of our senior warriors," he added as an afterthought. He knew Stonestar and Cygnetstep were quite fond of him. Any cat with working eyes had caught sight of some mix of the three sharing tongues at sunhigh. If not then, patrolling or hunting at each other's sides. It was a curious relationship, one he found himself envying, but he had a feeling there was something deeper than friendship between the three of them. Perhaps, he mused, Superpaw would not be his only kit for much longer. That was not something he'd be telling Spottedlegs.

He quieted as he considered how to phrase a question of his own. "...I... understand if this is private, but... I get the impression that ThunderClan wasn't kind to Hollowfrost. Whatever it is that's between him and the rest of your Clan, I think he'd prefer to keep Superpaw out of it. She doesn't deserve whatever treatment Hollowfrost was living with." There was something hard in Cedarheart's eyes as he told her this, an expression that hadn't crossed the tom's face in the entirety of their conversation at Sunningrocks. Cedarheart was quite lax about a number of aspects in Clan life: he was willing to take in wandering cats, willing to share a conversation on the borders of Sunningrocks- but he could not neglect protecting his Clanmates. The seriousness of his voice would echo the depth of that responsibility, even as the expression in his eyes softened to a silent apology. He wasn't sure how responsible she was for what happened in her brother's past.

A daughter!? She was an aunt?

Spottedlegs had been so caught up in the idea of fixing her relationships with her siblings that she hadn't thought that she would need to include any other family, until now she hadn't thought they had any. But this mysterious Superpaw was being added to a list of things she needed to do to make her family okay again, actually it had every been okay to begin with, and she could feel herself drowning in a new wave of stress. Perhaps she was in over her head with reaching out to another clan, even if there was family there.

She was so caught up in these thoughts the tabby missed Cedarhearts next words, but no one could have ignored the sharp edge his voice had suddenly taken. Her expression hardened as she turned her face to him, pale eyes narrowing in response to his own. Her concentration on him took away from her footing and for a moment her paws lifted from under her, though she was quick to steady herself and her slight swaying might have gone unnoticed.

The ThunderClanner accessed him quietly for a moment, relaxing herself once more within the current and allowing a pleased look to ease the tight line of her mouth. She wasn't sure how much she wanted to tell him but she felt the need to reassure him on some level. He's been so accommodating to her, a member from a rival clan. Though gathering up all her thoughts and sorting through them was a challenge all of it's own, especially since she wasn't the type to share her deeper thoughts with anyone.

"You don't have to worry about that from me," she began, her voice confident but her nervousness showed in the way she dropped her normally steady gaze. "I've caused my brother enough heartache, I won't be the cause of more. And I am sure our father..."

Spottedlegs broke off, giving her head a regretful shake. "No, that would be a lie. He doesn't regret anything. She took in a deep breath, exhaling loudly. Getting something so large of her chest was vastly relieving, even if a virtual stranger had to be the carrier of her feeling. "I have wanted nothing more then to mend what's broken in this family, if at all possible. At the very least let him know that I have regretted the things I have done. But I am to ashamed of myself to face him... So I come to Sunningrocks and stare at the water, like I fool I am."

Cedarheart looked down at the reflective surface of the water, standing just steps away from the frustrated she-cat without knowing where the boundaries were between them. It was such a sensitive, personal conversation, but they were also of rival Clans. Physical comfort didn't seem appropriate here, even if his instincts fought his better sense to provide it.

He let his ears slip sideways in a gentle, attentive expression. He could at least be a listening ear for her. His gaze flickered up to fix properly on her face as she spoke, though she wasn't looking at him in turn. He didn't mind. He wasn't sure how comfortably he could look into her eyes while she was this despondent. "You're not a fool," he said quietly. "Any cat could see your intelligence."

"...But I can understand the feeling. It sounds frustrating." He tilted his head, watching the shimmer of the water where it met her sleek fur. He let the silence settle again between them as he thought about how best to handle this. He wanted to help her. She was so vulnerable here and now that he didn't think he could leave her to resolve it alone without it weighing on his conscience. Helping her would help Hollowfrost, too, if only so far as helping him recover from past events. He worried for a moment, wondering if this was even what Hollowfrost would want. Did he want this connection with his sister? Would it make him happy? Cedarheart supposed that it was something the black tom would have to decide for himself, but he might never get the chance if he didn't help Spottedlegs now.

"You can't take back what you've already done, but you can try to change your actions in the future. I don't know how well an apology would go with Hollowfrost: it might end up frustrating him as much as helping him." His words were gentle, careful. He didn't want to offend her. As strange as it felt, encouraging the ThunderClanner felt like the right thing to do. "That said, I think your support might mean more than you think. He's worked hard to get where he is; just having someone recognise that would probably mean a lot to him." The admission was more significant than it seemed. He couldn't directly tell Spottedlegs that Hollowfrost was feeling insecure; to tell a cat of another Clan that their deputy wasn't self-assured seemed near to treason. But he could imply it and hope that the she-cat was noble enough to take the hint with pure intentions.

ThunderClan

Her eyes flashed back towards his face when he spoke, expressionless once more except for the surprised twitch that caused her whiskers to tremble. That had been the closest thing to a compliment she had ever received and her chest suddenly felt tight, though she couldn’t identify the emotions that had sprung to life inside of her. So the tabby ignored them, as she was so apt at doing, and shoved them into that dark place she kept the others. It was something she would access when she wasn’t face-to-face with one of RiverClans deputies.

Which made her all too aware of the fact she was still standing chest-deep in the river, claws curled into the pebbled bottom to keep herself grounded. Her broken paw floating easily beneath the surface, the pain having finally dulled in the icy current. Spotted knew she’d spent more than enough time lounging in the water and cast a hooded glance towards the tree line as she wade careful back onto the bank. A challenging job with the current tugging on her limps and having only three to work with.

Her tabby coat was plastered to her lean sides and the cool, fall wind caused her to shiver. Though she was quick to tense her muscles against the instinctive reaction. Spottedlegs braced her three paws apart, giving herself a quick, careful shake. Trying to dislodge what water she could. Of course the ThunderClanner knew she would be spending some time at Sunningrocks, hoping to dry the water from her pelt before returning back to camp.

She turned herself to face Cedarheart, who sat still on his side of the river. Feeling a sense of frustration that his advice only brought more uncertainty to what seemed like a hopeless situation already. But that feeling faded as he finished and left a thoughtful expression on her face, twisting her lips into a grimace. She wanted to be proud of Hollowfrosts accomplishments but still couldn’t help her deep rooted sense of betrayal and shame, not for herself now but towards her brother. Of course it was his family’s fault he had left ThunderClan and run to find shelter in another, the life of a loner wasn’t something just any clan cat could adjust to. Spottedlegs wasn’t at all certain she could live alone for the rest of her days, even if she wasn’t the most social cat now.

Her heart understood those things, his reasons for going to RiverClan and finding peace. But she’d grown up ignoring her heart. And her mind had been formed by their father for most of her life and it was having trouble keeping up with the war she’d started within herself.

”I… urgh!” She broke off with an angry snarl, jerking her face around and away from the handsome tom. For a long moment she was silent and tense. But finally she released a long breath, though she was still struggling inside. ”You didn’t have to do any of this,” she began, turning her face back to him. ”I realize that you did not do this for me. Can I assume my brother is the reason you have told me these things? And if so, why?”

Afflicted with paw-in-mouth syndrome.

RiverClan

Cedarheart watched her turn away and begin to pick her way toward the riverbank. If he was honest with himself, he was surprised that she'd stepped in at all let alone stayed this long. He did his best not to begrudge her leaving, instead carefully sinking in to swim further across the river.

He swam with a graceful ease that spoke of many moons practicing. It was a way of life for him as much as hers was scouting in tree tops. Cedarheart's paws grazed the riverbed as it shallowed again. He rose to stand again, placing his paws in the same little hollows that Spottedlegs had clawed in while she'd stood in the current.

All this for one reason; he hadn't wanted to shout at her for her to hear him.

He was taken aback by her snarl when she turned, actively holding her back to him. He didn't reply for a while, grateful that she filled the silence herself. It explained enough that he at least knew he hadn't offended her.

That didn't stop the spark of guilt in his chest. Either this was all for Hollowfrost, or he was definitely approaching a gray area within The Code. He wasn't sure which felt worse until she was looking him in the eyes. He hadn't lied to her yet, he supposed. Why start now? "Some of this was always for Hollowfrost," he answered, "if only because I want to see him happy. I have no family in RiverClan but the family I've made."

He swallowed painfully, the loneliness of that flashing in his eyes. He missed them more than he cared to admit, felt the absence of a mate too strongly when he watched his Clanmates together. "...I didn't help you to the river because of Hollowfrost," he admitted. "I don't think I really thought about it at all, until you asked me to bring you here. At... risky as it is to have done it, I wanted to help you."

"You asked for my help, Spottedlegs. The fact that you did, probably knowing exactly who I am to my Clan; it was braver and more honest than I really expected. I didn't want to be the cat who looked down on you for that, not when I had the power to help you instead."
He had slowly inched forward when he spoke, padding closer to her so that they stood only a few tail-lengths apart. He didn't dare to step on shore with her standing there, but the message in his body language was clear: he'd done this for her as much as for her brother.

ThunderClan

She watched him swim across the shallow water, the ease of which he did so was memorizing but also a clear reminder to her that she was getting a bit to chummy with someone from another clan. Not that they were friends but still, they were walking a line here. A line she wouldn't never have thought of walking before, but Spottedlegs had been desperate for any connection with her brother.

The tabby couldn't understand his sentiment about making a family, she never had a real family at all, and until recently hadn't even thought that was important. But she could easily relate to the loneliness that flickered across his pale, green eyes. It was the feeling that had caused many restless nights and stressful days filled with non-stop work. All attempts to ignore that feeling. Had he done the same? "Have you always been lonely?" She surprised herself by asking the question, jaws gaping a moment before she snapped them closed again.

Shying away as Cedarheart subtlety moved closer, not taking any steps but leaning back. Weary of the short space between them, though at this point she wasn't suspicious that he would attack her, simply uncomfortable with any kind of invasion of her space. But she was made more uncomfortable by his words, though they were not unwelcome. The meaning behind them merely surprised her and that surprise showed, widening her green eyes.

That feeling was back in her chest again, although this time it was harder to ignore the mush of emotions with him so much closer. Where was her normal grip on all things logic and reason? Where had this emotional mess of a warrior come from?

Spottedlegs tore her eyes from his, that mirrored hers so well, and cleared her throat. "You don't know anything about me," she meowed, exasperated. "And I find it hard to believe that a RiverClan deputy is willing to help me just because I asked. And I only asked because I wanted to know more about my brother.... not that I'm not brave or honest, because I am!" She broke off her flustered rambling, ears flattening against her skull. Never in all her moons had she chatted nervously, nor had she ever 'chatted' so much! But then she'd never thought she'd find herself talking to one of RiverClan's deputy trying to find out more about the other, nor did she realize she could find herself not hating the experience. Liking it.

She gave herself another small shake and forced a deep sigh. "Excuse my outburst," she grumbled, looking back at him. Although it was hard to do.
