Swift held still as Sageleaf began grooming her ears in firm, but gentle strokes. It was a soothing sensation, not as rough as Adderstrike had been in the early days of their separation from WindClan, and she took comfort in the warmth of the older she-cat beside her.
Her eyes only reopened when Sageleaf abruptly stopped. The tortoiseshell lifted her muzzle off her paws, pressing back into the weight of Sageleaf's chin on her forehead. She was quiet for a moment, ears twitching as she realized that the decision had to be made now. Whatever she chose, Adderstrike would not wait another day for her to make up her mind. The idea that they'd leave him at all probably hadn't occurred to him.
And why would it? His brusque but sweet call to his children. Her heart felt heavy in her chest as she tentatively stumbled to her paws and padded to join Polkapaw. She knew what the spotted tom wanted to tell their father- and his open defiance now was as bolstering to her own confidence as it was terrifying-, what Crow would want to tell him; what did she want? She didn't know if she was right to put herself before Adderstrike, but she did know what was right for her brothers.
Polkapaw's voice had been strong when he made his choice. She could not be anything less. The timid tortoiseshell could feel the tremble in her legs as she found herself brushing flank-to-flank with Polkapaw. "I want to stay with Polkapaw," she mewed nervously. The undersized she-cat tilted her head to meet her father's gaze; this was not going to go over well. "I'm not leaving my brothers."

His eyes were watching his daughter approach but snapped down to Polkapaw, peering down his nose at the ginger patched apprentice. Expression filling with careful surprise, an expression that cracked when Swift added her voice to her brothers.
This wasn’t how he’d thought their little reunion would go. The surprise on his face was genuine now.
The former WindClanner had thought to show up, spend the night, and leave with another son that dearly missed them and wanted to be part of his family again. Wasn’t that how cats ruled by their emotions thought? Wasn’t that what they all wanted? His jaw line tightened and the darkness he’d been so careful to hide flared in his dark eyes. Each thought becoming more uncontrolled, more furious as his logic failed him. Plans crumbling before his paws. He wasn’t gaining any pieces for his army, he was losing some.
And then, out the corner of his eye he spotted a familiar, golden pelt padding towards them. He hadn’t seen his brother is some time, yet he was as familiar to Adderstrike as his own son had been. He reined in his anger, concealing it once more in an attempt to salvage the situation. If his children wouldn’t listen to reason, perhaps his brother would help him. “Goldenstep,” he meowed hesitantly, hopefully.
The warrior opened his mouth to voice a similar welcome, but found himself without words. Eyes flickering down to Polkapaw, to the niece he’d never thought to see again, and back up again. There was a deep guilt and regret in those eyes, but it wasn’t for Adderstrike. It was for his nephew, for never believing what he could so clearly see when he looked at Swift.
How skinny she was, how scared she was… And yet still he didn’t want it to be true.
“Adderstrike,” he began steadily. “They will be safe her. Stormsong and I will look after them. And maybe you…” he broke off, eyes darting to Rowanstar. “You should stay with us, this is where we were born. This is home. To all of us.”
// I’m gonna wait for Rowan to reply before he loses his cool. But he’s already starting to crack under the pressure.
