not a bang, but a whimper

The air was crisp and cool, the distant rumble of thunderstorms lingering far off in the horizons. It smelled like rain, with a northwesterly wind blowing. Absolutely none of that mattered. It would rain shortly, but by then the hunter would be long gone, or so he'd hope. Rugged, lean but still strong, the unknown moved with a relaxed haste, prowling along the borders as he cut through undergrowth with an uncanny silence.

There were people here, and he couldn't afford to be caught. He already was poaching, and with the moon being near-full there was a light glow in the grass as the high-level clouds rolled in. He could see them from here, and knew the storms were almost upon him. So Six moved, rolling in swift, coiled lunges, rattling a branch as he moved and scaring a water vole from cover. And in one, fluid bite, he shattered the spine, before taking it and beginning a hasty retreat back to the borders.

The twittering of the songbird was the clearest thing about her. She flitted from branch to branch, following the hunter as he closed in on his prey. She had nothing to say for the time being, but her sharp, odd-coloured eyes tracked his movements as the rest of her remained on alert for danger. She wasn't protecting him, per se, just... invested in his continued survival. For now.

Also, if he died, she was going to kill him. For sure. She reserved that right -- as long as he didn't know.

Finally, finally the feline picked up his prey, and she fluttered above him, hopping madly for a moment before combing her short bursts of flight with her hops across land. Time to work her magic, and point out possible improvements!
"That sure was a good deal of work you put into that kill! Excellent form, cunning execution! Horribly disappointing results. Maybe next time catch more."

Oh sure, she didn't care about making noise. Anything to mock his attempts.

That bird would be the death of him. He was trying to be quiet for once, and here Failsafe was, making noise and ruining his aspect of stealth. "When was the last time I reminded you to shut up? It seems like it's not more than two-four hours." And there he dropped the vole, just inside the border, popping his jaw as he yawned, before staring down Failsafe again, cocking his head to see if there was any noise around him that could be an issue.

Not hearing anything or anybody approaching, he took the liberty of opening up the vole, snagging a cricket that jumped by underpaw. "Come on. Dinner."

"Don't act as though I'm ruining your stealth -- I'm sure they can smell you a mile off."

She mocked, unable to do any more of the 'stay quiet and keep up game'. She didn't like that game very much, and the more she thought about it, the more she was convinced that it was a trick of her travelling companion to get her to shut up. Hmph, well, at least she had gotten some pre-emptive revenge.

"Fortunately, everything here smells like week-old fish, so you fit right in!"

She chirped cheerily, trying to fight a positive in his stench. It was her fault, after all -- she just kept finding these little bugs that put off the most horrendous smell and placing them in his vicinity. Check! She was called upon to eat though, and settled herself quickly, pecking away at the deceased bug and pulling it apart with each savage stab of the beak. Food in her presence, she would allow a moment of silence for the two of them.

A cool draft blew by, and she fluffed up in protest.

"Stealth's not the concern. You're just annoying." Six smirked to himself, ripping a shred of meat off the vole's back, chewing and eating quickly before looking around warily. He had a feeling somebody was watching, and he wanted to be well clear before things got bad. "And I don't smell that bad."

"Rude. If I wasn't around there'd be no one to listen to your ramblings."

The cool breeze pushed on her once more and the poor warm-weather bird hopped over to her friend. The colder the weather got, the harder it was for her to fly, even as her feathers grew back. She'd never actually flown, to be frank; clipped wings stopped her her entire life. Now she could make it short distances, but when it came time for her to hide from the cold, she climbed up Six' leg and nestled in his fur, trying to hide from the cooler breezes that threatened her thin plumage.

"Fine. You don't smell that bad. At least, not right now. If you could refrain from becoming 'one with your surroundings', then you could find yourself much improved."
