Elkpath

Tom | Med Cat Apprentice | 12 moons

Context: Rosepaw has been feeding Elkpath small doses of foxglove seeds unknowingly.

He had tried to not pay attention to it, chalking it up to the changing weather of the upcoming leaf-fall. He had started feeling ill a few weeks ago. Nothing too serious, just feeling a bit dizzy and nauseous every now and then. Elkpath found himself taking random breath breaks as he was hunting and his night sleeps were full of restlessness and slight pain.
This morning was the worst of it. Elkpath could feel the threat of bile rising up in his throat but he kept the feeling subsided. His eyes hung low and the light was like a thousand needles being jamed into his skull.
The freshkill pile was looking a little low and despite his sickness Elkpath refused to be useless. Slowly he made his way toward the exit of camp. The sides of his vision were soon consumed in a growing darkness and before Elkpath could comprehend what was happening he collapsed, just a meer tail-length from the exit of camp.

"Elkpath?"

The tabby tom's eyes had widened upon seeing the medic collapse. Without hesitation, he hurried over to see if the other tom was okay.

He lowered his muzzle slightly to get a better look. It seemed that he'd passed out.
Was he tired? Sick? "Elkpath?" he repeated, hoping that it wasn't anything too serious. If it was...

Anxiously, Lark shifted his gaze back toward the medicine cats' den. Whatever it was, he surely wouldn't be able to help on his own.

Peppernose was an observant cat, and Elkpath's increasingly strange behavior had not gone unnoticed by the senior medicine cat. Until now, she had decided to just keep an eye on her apprentice, to try and determine what was wrong with him before intervening. After all, he could have just contracted a cold, or eaten a bad piece of kill. But as his symptoms grew worse, Peppernose grew more concerned.

The medicine cat had been watching when Elkpath had begun to leave camp, and she had been on her way to suggest he come back to the den and rest when she saw him collapse.

"Elkpath" cried Peppernose in alarm, hurrying to his side. Larkpaw was already nearby, but not providing any assistance. But what was wrong with Elkpath? There was nothing that Peppernose could see; usually illness left traces outside of the body in some way, but this seemed entirely internal. He would need to be brought back to the medicine den and carefully monitored.

"Larkpaw, I need help carrying Elkpath back to my den," said the small tuxedo to the nearby apprentice. Peppernose grabbed Elkpath by the scruff and prepared to drag him back inside.

The tomcat felt a rush of relief as the other medic arrived at the scene. Without hesitation, he obeyed and helped support Elkpath's weight.

"Do you know what might be wrong?"
he asked, voice wavering slightly.

Elkpath

Tom | Med Cat Apprentice | 12 moons

For a moment the medicine cat apprentice couldn't comprehend where he was. The voices around him were muffled by the constant ringing and he felt disoriented and confused. What had happened. In a sudden rush memories flooded back to him but he was still unable to covey his emotions to others. What Elkpath had meant to saw was "[i]Don't worry. false alarm. everything is fine.[/b]" yet all that came out was a slurred version of it.
"Dont...M'fine..." Elkpath even tried to stand on his own as he was hauled but it was to no avail. Suddenly Elkpath could feel the bile rising in his throat only this time it was threatening to spill over. He knew Larkpaw was close by, he could hear his voice. Yet as much as he willed himself to fight against the bile to avoid embarrassment. Ultimately he had no control and ended up vomiting on the floor. Exhausted once again the medicine cat fell into a stage of unconsciousness

As soon as Elkpath was back in the medicine den, Peppernose got to work trying to figure out what was wrong with her apprentice. The young tom seemed to be falling in and out of consciousness and was clearly quite ill.

"Stop being stubborn," she told him plainly as he tried to protest, keeping a white paw on his side to try and prevent him from moving when he tried. She could sense him becoming sick, and was quick to assist him in vomiting and moving him away once he was done. It seemed he was out again, which was good, because Peppernose didn't want to listen to him complain about the examination.

Larkpaw was still there, but the medicine cat didn't have an answer for him yet, nor any way for the apprentice to help.

Peppernose pressed her ear to Elkpaw's flank to check for irregularities in heartbeat or breathing, and peered and sniffed at his face for signs of mucus. This didn't seem like a natural sickness like whitecough or allergies. Could he have been poisoned somehow?

"Larkpaw, do you know anything that might help me understand what's going on? Do you know if he's eaten anything weird recently, for example?"

Larkpaw's eyes widened slightly as his friend threw up, and he felt his fur begin to prickle as his worry increased. If this ever happened to a cat in the city, they were a goner. Period. Unless they had humans to turn to for help. Even then, sometimes those cats wouldn't come back after their humans drove off with them.

He anxiously searched his memories for anything strange that Elkpath may have eaten. His diet seemed normal enough; nothing really stood out. Could it have just been bad prey or something?

"Not that I've seen," he admitted, frowning. "Do you think something was wrong with the prey that he was eating?"

Cats in the city got sick from the food they pulled from the trash a lot of the time. But the wild was a little different, from what he'd seen so far.

feral child

Tumble didn't understand what was happening, but there was illness here. They felt it like they felt the burn on the sun on their back, like they felt their eyes dry out in the light. The sensitive creature couldn't comprehend what was going on, only that there was illness. Their nose twitched, overly aware of what was happening. Living around dampness and wet stone for so long, having to find the slightest trail of a scent in conditions like that made Tumble's nose especially sharp.

That's probably why, when the feral child stuck their head into the medicine cat den out of blatant curiosity, their nose twitched and and they sneezed in distaste, ears pinned back and tongue stuck out a little. Gross.
