<div class="mikkipost">Twolegs were a particularly stupid breed of creature. The storms that had struck ShadowClan a week past had done nothing to ease the dryness of the forest. The ground had drunk up the rainwater with the greed of a dying man in a desert, and in the aftermath was left woefully wanting.
<p>
And the twolegs, well... they did not heed the warnings as they should have.
<p>
It began at the edge of the junkyard, where the forest butted right up against the unstable fencing that hadn't been tended to in years. The first swirling wisps of smoke were nearly invisible against the deep midnight blue of the darkening sky. Trash heaps ignited with startling ease, knocking down the first domino in a chain effect that would rattle the forest forever.
<p>
It didn't take long for the first branches at the forest's edge to ignite, going up in a flare of flame and smoke. The perfect fodder, the trees all began to catch, one by one, until the forest was alive with a raging fire that moved at a deadly pace.
<p>
And then all hell broke loose.
<p>
-------
<p>
Smoke lay thick in the air, settled low to the ground like a sinister fog. Ravenstar, still blinking sleep from his eyes, reared back in shock. "SHADOWCLAN!" he bellowed, racing to the center of camp. "GET UP! FIRE!"</div>[/dohtml]

<div class="mikkipost">His paws found the ancient niches in the rock one by one, going through the motions with the startling ease of something done by habit. Months had passed by since StarClan first revealed him as ShadowClan's true leader, each one making things easier, little by little. He still found the tasks before him difficult, still uncomfortable being suddenly thrust into a role that it never occurred he might have.
<p>
It still felt strange, standing on the High Rock. Looking out over camp - his camp - Ravenstar was struck, time and again, with the strange sensation being somewhere he didn't quite belong.
<p>
He pushed aside the feeling, as he did every time he needed to make this climb. "All cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the High Rock for a clan meeting!" The words were the easiest, comforting him in their familiarity. As his clan gathered below, Ravenstar searched the crowd for the faces of the two he needed.

//this is set slightly before eveningpaw and winterlights' deaths bc i'm going to do a separate meeting + announcements for those. @Battlecry, @Peonypaw</div>[/dohtml]

<div class="mikkipost">Branches whipped back into his face as he tore through the forest, slashing across his muzzle and chest. He barely seemed to register the stinging pain they left in their wake, nor the blood they drew even as it ran down into his eyes and nose and mouth. The taste of coppery blood wasn't enough to register that he should stop, collect himself. The burning in his legs wasn't enough to make him stop, to catch his breath, to think on the clan in disarray he'd just left behind.
<p>
The threads linking him to Burnbright and Lightpaw were numb, too; strangely empty, colder and quieter than they'd ever been. Not even that was enough to make Ravenstar consider what he'd done. The third bond, the connection that bridged between him and Chainsaw, was gone now, too. His daemon had shattered in the sky, dissolving into smoke when the distance between them became too much to bear. His nose still bore the bloody evidence of that, streaking down his lips in dried up rivers.
<p>
He could see hear the cries from the nursery echoing in his ears, as if the memory of them had chased him all the way from ShadowClan's camp. Peatkit's tear-stained face flashed behind his eyes, the image of it sketched into the back of his eyelids.
<p>
The twin spirits - one gold, one silver - taking wing and flying away before he even had a chance to say goodbye.
<p>
Ravenstar's paws skidded on the dead leaves blanketing the forest floor, stopping in time to bend over and retch into the exposed roots of a tree. Nothing but bile came up, watery and foul tasting on his tongue. For several long, painful minutes that was all he could do: hunch over the twisting roots and endure his stomach's attempt to climb up his throat. </div>[/dohtml]

<div class="mikkipost">For the third time in as many weeks, he woke to darkness. Not the Dark Forest, but a complete, utter darkness that seemed to swallow the entire world. It was only the sensation of grass beneath his feet as he struggled to get to his feet, to stand firm as the ground rocked under him.
<p>
He tried to take a step, but the motion unbalanced him. Ravenstar tipped forward, but without his sight he wasn't quick enough to stop in time. He landed awkwardly, foot catching on what felt like stone as he threw it out to cushion his fall. A hiss shot past his clenched teeth, the motion jarring him so sharply he bit his tongue.
<p>
"Hello?"
<p>
The call echoed on through the darkness, back and forth until it faded altogether. Ravenstar struggled back to his feet, hating the way his body swayed precariously left and right. When he tried to take another step forward it was slow and cautious, mindful now of the way his balance was thrown without the use of his sight.
<p>
Ravenstar...
<p>
He spun, nearly tripping in his haste. But it was like an echo of an echo, there and gone just as fast. He heard it again a moment later, and again he whirled to face the sound. But it, too, was gone.
<p>
The dream shattered all at once, just as suddenly as it had appeared. Sunlight streamed in through the mouth of the den, liquid gold shafts of it falling across his face. Ravenstar groaned, squinting against the sudden brightness as he rolled out of his nest.
<p>
Outside was just as bright, sending pinpricks of pain stabbing his eyes. Ravenstar squinted against it, jaw ticking as his thoughts returned to the dream.
<p>
As if in answer, the darkness crept in. Just at the edges, as though in warning, before they receded and disappeared for good.
<p>
"What the fuck..."</div>[/dohtml]

<div class="mikkipost">At least there was no stranger waiting to spew hate and threats waiting for them this time.
<p>
Ravenstar took the hill at a brisk trot, mindful of where he put his paws with every step - it would be just his luck that he managed to trip and fall headlong down the hill. His first Gathering as ShadowClan's leader had gone well enough... save for the minor incident at the very beginning, when a miscalculated jump had sent him flying over the Great Rock instead of to the top of it.
<p>
It was the first Gathering since the start of his leadership that ShadowClan was first to arrive. The clearing felt strangely empty, almost too quiet without the familiar clamor of five clans all talking at once. At least they didn't have to brave a long, cold walk anymore - at least until newleaf and greenleaf took their turns. No doubt it would feel like no more than a day before leafbare was on them again, gripping them tight in its cold clutches.
<p>
There was naught a cloud in the sky to be see, the great swath of star-studded darkness high above undisturbed in its entirety. Despite the late hour, the Gathering hollow was awash in a bright silver glow - every bud, every blooming flower, every newborn blade of grass, was limned in the pale light that gleamed from the full moon.
<p>
Ravenstar launched himself atop the Great Rock - without difficulty, points for him - and sat back to watch his clan settle down in the too-quiet clearing. A silence, he knew, that would not last long.</div>[/dohtml]
