The quest was quite vague. They would be heading to twolegplace and hoping that StarClan would lead them toward what they intended. And if nothing happened, they could wander around for a day and then return to camp. At the very least, this would be good experience for everyone involved.

It was dawn. Coalstep stood waiting in the center of camp for the patrol to meet. His gaze flickered toward Silverstar's den every few moments. Already he had said goodbye to his mate, but he wouldn't be surprised if she came out to send the entire patrol off. It would be hard to leave her behind-- Arctickit and Emberkit, too. But he'd told them all how much he loved them and that he would be back in just a matter of days. This was temporary, right?

Piled before him was burnet. Despite having no medicine cat, some herbs were still common with the warriors, and one had mentioned that this particular herb was used for traveling. It would keep their strength up and allow them to go a little longer without food. There were other traveling herbs, but no one had been able to identify them. Truthfully, Coalstep had been doubtful that this was the right herb at all. If it wasn't, very bad things could have happened. He'd taken a risk, though, and had tried a leaf yesterday. No bad effects had happened, and he supposed he did feel a little more energetic than normal. It wouldn't harm them, at the very least. Now all he had to do was wait for the rest of the patrol.

spiderfur would appear next, yawning a bit sleepily himself. the black tom was nervous as could be, still not particularly fond on visiting his old stomping grounds again. still, he knew it was necessary. he sniffed at the burnet, wondering if exactly what it was for? energy, he figured, seeing as it'd be a long journey. "so, one leaf?" the dark-furred tom would ask the thunderclan deputy, knocking one free from the pile.

Darklingkit sat near the apprentice den while her father readied the patrol, her mouth set into a frown. The blue tabby looked tired and irritable. Although her parents had explained it to her, she found it difficult to understand why they were leaving to search for a strange cat her mother had dreamt of. Why not Arctickit? Decidedly unhappy, she watched, her gaze trained anxiously on Coalstep.

What if he didn't come home? She huffed, flanks hitching up and down, her mind running through all the possibilities.

Duke, for short!

ThunderClan

Duke was next to arrive, meandering alongside the apprentice den to try and push his nose onto Darklingkit's head. "You're up early, kiddo," he commented, words perhaps muffled by her kit-fluff (though it was rapidly fading; she'd be a 'paw soon). He yawned as he turned his gaze to Coalstep and Jack, frowning at the leaves. "Y'all think those would work on me?" he asked, semi-doubtful. He was pretty sure he'd eaten all manner of herbs before and couldn't imagine why they'd be useful here.

Not Dead Yet

ThunderClan

Silverstar

Leader | She-Cat | 24 moons

The journey was weighing heavily on the leaders mind, the idea of not being there if they faced any sort of danger made her feel useless. How dare she not be able to be in two places at once. Deep down Silverstar knew it was silly, this was a perfectly capable group of warriors who were able to protect themselves, however Silverstar still couldn't help but feel like she was in a way abandoning them. Silverstar touched her tail to her daughters head, she could tell she felt as if Silverstar was choosing this stranger over Arctickit, however Silverstar wanted to have a true medicine cat before they tried to risk anything in another BloodClan raid. "This stranger will help us bring back Arctickit, I promise." Said the she-cat before touching her nose to Darklings head.
She turned her head toward Coalstep and approached him before she intertwined her tail with his. She closed her eyes and pressed her forehead against his before stepping back to allow the patrol room. "You all come back safe, understand?" She said, a hint of authority in her voice, as if she were ordering them.

Just one? It hadn't occurred to Coalstep that the herbs would have stronger affects with multiple leaves. Of course, he wasn't willing to risk such an experiment now, anyway.

"Yeah, just one. Uh, not sure if they'll do anything for ya, Duke. Can't hurt to try, I guess?" Coalstep shrugged, picking up a leaf for himself and quickly chewing it up. He wrinkled his nose at the taste; it wasn't foul or bitter, but he preferred his food to be bloody rather than leafy.

After swiping his tongue around his mouth, Coalstep sat back. "Duke, could you go see if Frigidpaw is in the apprentice's den? The sooner we can head out, the better." Was there anyone else he was missing? Spiderfur was here, Duke was here. Southskies! "And see if Southskies is around, would ya?"

He turned as Silverstar approached, just as he'd expected, and let his gaze soften. As she pressed against him, Coalstep let his mind go blank. He focused solely on being with Silverstar, feeling the warmth from her touch and storing the memory in his mind. How could he be leaving her and their kits behind?

As she moved away, Coalstep blinked slowly, a somber smile making its way to his face. "StarClan themselves couldn't keep me from coming back to my family."

Duke, for short!

"Yeah, I'll snag one before we go," he agreed with a shrug, nodding to the deputy's words. He paused before leaving, though, casting an amused glance to Silverstar (and then quickly redirecting his eyes, 'cause she was having a moment with Coal). "I'll bring 'em all back in one piece. Scouts' honor," he swore, bouncing off to the apprentice and warrior dens to check for the other half of their patrol.

He wasn't super excited to spend this time with Frigidpaw, what with her being, well, frigid, but Jack and Southskies should make it a party. Coalstep'd keep 'em on the right track, too, since he prolly knew the way to the city. Eh, Duke would survive; he'd made it through worse before!

FORGET WHO YOU ARE

ThunderClan

one he would eat then. jack chewed up the leaf, nose wrinkling at the taste. he was still dreading this trip, but thunderclan (and dusty) needed this new medicine cat, whoever they were and he was ready to do whatever it took. he didn't add to the reassurances though, a bit too lost in his own swirling thoughts about the city.

"er actually," jack put in quietly, ears pricking almost instinctively at the call of southskies's name and mouth running as usual, faster than he could keep up with it, "i can go find southskies." but nope, duke was already on the job. part of jack was glad for that even though he'd volunteered. the other part of him was feeling things that he recognized instantly but promptly decided to avoid because they only really made everything much more complicated than it had any right being.

he sighed and simply resolved to wait until the rest of the patrol had showed up. what with the mess of whatever it was that he was feeling swirling around in him, perhaps it was better if he just avoided southskies altogether.

yeah. yeah, he could do that. there were the other members of their patrol beyond her. coalstep, thunderclan's serious deputy, and frigidpaw, who was certainly true to her name, and duke. yeah, jack would just, talk to one of them. duke was a pretty conversational dude, right? jack tried not to the let dread swirling in him show on his face and prayed to whoever was listening to have a little mercy on him for once and let this trip go smoothly.

"i'm here." southskies gasped, slightly out of breath and looking a little bedraggled. her fur was slightly unkempt, paws caked in mud, but it was obvious to see what she'd been up to by the swing of prey in her jaws. always an early riser, she hadn't been able to allow herself the few hours extra rest before their journey. she couldn't stop tossing and turning, wrestling with concern over the task laid before her. it was easier to hunt. it allowed her the chance to clear her mind and focus, rather than fret over the path ahead stretching endlessly into the unknown.

southskies quickly deposited her catch on the freshkill and bounded over to join the rest of the patrol, her own share of the travelling herbs swallowed in a few quick chews. she tilted her head to silverstar and coalstep, and offered duke a quick good morning. but the look she afforded spiderfur was slightly frosty. she smiled, but the look didn't quite meet her eyes - and it wasn't more than a heartbeat or two before she turned her attention away from him. "are we ready, then?"

"We're still waiting on Frigidpaw," Coalstep replied, tail licking from side to side. The sooner they could get moving, the better. "We'll wait just a few more minutes, and if she isn't here by then we'll have to go without her."

After many more moments of sorrowful good byes (temporarily, rest assured) and a little more hesitation from both the departing group and those who would remain in camp, Coalstep finally urged them to leave. He gave his kits both one last lick on the head and reminded them to behave while he was gone. To Silverstar, the gray and white tom pressed his muzzle firmly into the fur of her neck and murmured a soft 'I love you' before stepping back and leading the group out of camp.

Hours had passed since that moment. They had already left ThunderClan territory behind, but their journey was still just starting. So far, no trouble had appeared. The sun was moving steadily across the sky and was just on the verge of sunset. Light chatter had filled awkward silences.

---

"We'll stop here for the night." Coalstep glanced around the area. It wasn't much, but it would do. The forest had thinned out significantly, and while the trees and bushes weren't as dense as the ThunderClan group was used to, they would do well enough for makeshift dens. "I'd suggest hunting while there's still some light. Keep your guard up. If anything seems out of the ordinary, let me or Spiderfur know right away." He nodded toward the other tom who had been assigned as co-leader. Admittedly, Coalstep felt guilty at having led the patrol thus far. It was such a natural thing for him to do at this point, but he knew the other tom had just as much right. Tomorrow would be his turn, and Coalstep would take a break to hang out with the rest of the group.

Duke, for short!

ThunderClan

Hunting? Duke grimaced when Coalstep mentioned it; such a thing was important, of course, but he really hadn't caught anything since one single mouse moons ago. He'd come back to camp that day and had thrown up pretty much everywhere, disgusted by how low he'd sunk; he lived with cats, yes, but he would do well to remember that he was not one of them. "I'll dig us some scrapes to protect us from the wind tonight," he volunteered instead, ready to put his rabbitry skills to good use. Something in the lee of a small dip would keep them warm, especially if they piled close.

FORGET WHO YOU ARE

hunting? jack didn't think he'd be able to. for one, he was so tired that he could barely see straight, practically falling over as coalstep called a rest, and two, his stomach was in knots.

in all honesty, jack was perfectly content to let coalstep lead the entire way. he'd had his time for leadership once upon a time and it had failed spectacularly so he'd taken that as a sign that perhaps he wasn't cut out for leadership.

at any rate, as stated earlier, jack was pretty much exhausted. surprisingly, his nightmares hadn't diminished at all after he and dusty's reunion. if anything, they'd only gotten more chaotic. it was proper though, considering how damn jumbled his feelings were. it didn't help that southskies was still giving him the cold shoulder. why that upset him so? he couldn't really figure out, but it did and more than anything, he wanted it to stop.

"i'll help out duke," he mumbled after a few minutes of trying to summon enough energy to actually do something, fair lot of good it would do to be sleeping while his clanmates were working.

Of course, Coalstep hadn't expected Duke to partake in the hunting, and so his offer of scraping up a place to sleep was given a nod of approval. When Spiderfur offered to help him, though, Coalstep merely shrugged and disappeared into the bushes. The other warrior looked tired, but they were all tired. He'd just have to catch himself food later if he was hungry.

Distracting thoughts clung to Coalstep's mind, and no matter how hard he tried to get himself to focus, he would soon slip away. He forced himself to stop walking, knowing that he was beginning to stray too far from the group. Sure, his leg had long since healed, but he would forever walk with a limp which only made it harder to move quickly.

Coalstep sat for a good many minutes with closed eyes, taking the opportunity to reflect on the journey. What if this was all a waste of time? ThunderClan hadn't exactly had the best relationship with StarClan lately, although he doubted they would send ThunderClan on a wild goose chase. Still, he had a bad feeling about the outcome of the adventure.

That bad feeling was only intensified as a twig snapped behind him and just moments later Coalstep found himself in a sharp pain. The deputy let out a distressed yowl and clawed blindly at whatever was attacking him. He couldn't concentrate. Everything was moving so quickly. There was a flash of black, and then he fell to the ground. Coalstep struggled to his paws and spun around, but nothing was there. It only took a second to regain his senses, and the overwhelming scent of badger filled his nose.

He needed help. No way could he fight off this brute by himself. "Spiderfur! Southskies!" he yowled, spinning around in a circle. Where had the stupid thing disappeared to?

despite the travelling herbs hastily swallowed before the beginning of their journey, southskies' body ached fiercely. weariness clung to every inch of her, dragging at her every step until she was certain she would collapse. but it didn't keep her from remaining alert, green eyes sweeping from shrubbery to tree to sky and back again. she'd elected to remain silent through the journey, and dreaded any smalltalk that might pass between the rest of the patrol. especially spiderfur, who couldn't seem to hold his tongue for longer than the span of a heartbeat.

but surprisingly, and thankfully - or was that disappointment that lurked in the shadows of her mind, hidden just out of reach but still within sight, just close enough to make her question how she truly felt - spiderfur had also kept quiet.

the tabby stretched her aching body the moment coalstep called for a stop, relishing the feel of bone and tendons popping. her eyes lingered on spiderfur as she arched her back. look at me, she thought. look at me, you stupid, idiotic, lying-

southskies cut the thought off before it could completely manifest. with a sharp growl she whirled on her paws and stalked into the undergrowth, the opposite direction coalstep had taken. she had no backwards glance to offer, but did toss a few hasty words back to anyone who might be listening, "going hunting."

it didn't take long for southskies to track down a mouse. beyond the borders, in undisputed land where no clan reigned, the forest teemed with life. the first mouse practically threw itself into her paws, and the second was nearly the same.

she was on the third when coalstep's pained screech cut through the air. apprehension lit a fire underneath southskies' paws. she took off without hesitation, her hunt and successful catches forgotten. a quick sprint became a full-out frenzied run when coalstep called again, this time shouting for her and spiderfur - but he didn't need to shout to get their attention. she broke through a cluster of dying brambles, hit the reeking stench of badger like a wall.

southskies stood flank-to-flank with coalstep, her back to him as she searched the undergrowth behind him. even with the thin foliage it was hard to get a read on the beast. its black-and-white fur helped to blend into the shadows, even while it lumbered around to shake off their tracking eyes.

it reared suddenly out of the bracken in front of her, swiping with deadly claws at her face. southskies ducked and rolled out of reach. "watch out!" she warned coalstep before launching herself at the badger, scrabbling to get a grip on its oily fur with her front claws. she sank her teeth into its flesh, eyes watering from the smell and taste of it's body. one bite, then another, tearing bloody chunks of fur with each one. the badger roared in agony, but the wounds were trivial to such a thing. it shook southskies off with ease. she let go, but wasn't fast enough to avoid its claws. they caught her in the shoulder, rending flesh and ripping fur. blood bubbled from the wound immediately. it was deep, but not deadly.
