Charlie had never been known to be the most sociable person. There were many things he'd rather do than talk to and get to know his schoolmates, like sit in the silence of the library and study, as he was right now. It was a place he often went to, either to get away from the hustle and bustle of school life, or to simply clear his head by losing himself in fictional stories and books of history. He never liked the noise that often plagued the castle's halls. There, among the many bookcases and worn spines of novels, he actually felt at ease.

They had only recently returned from break, but he was already reading up on his subjects, currently engrossed in his transfiguration textbook. He had never really enjoyed the class, as it was one of few that actually gave him some trouble. Still, he was adamant on getting it right, though truly understanding it was optional at this point. Unlike some of his classmates, he made his grades his top priority.

He usually had no problem while studying, but the night before had been particularly rough and so he found himself drifting off multiple times, his head leaning forwards down towards the table. His exhaustion was clear on his face, his eyes glazed over as they skimmed over the words on the page, barely taking them in while he yawned. He paused his reading to rub at his face, his whole body feeling heavy.

Grunting in frustration, he slipped the book closed, deciding to move onto something else for the time being. He wouldn't make any progress with it at this rate. Charlie slid it off to the side, exchanging it for his book on potions.

finn had been damn near a social butterfly the past couple of weeks. he'd made the effort to talk to some of his housemates in their common room, had attended the bonfire and spoken to a random hufflepuff. and on top of all of that, minus the fight that he'd gotten into the night of the feast, he'd been on his best behavior. he was actually rather proud of himself.

like always, of course, his luck had to turn. particularly to shit. it had been a day. the gryffindor had gotten into a fight over breakfast for reasons that he couldn't even remember and then, after classes, he'd gotten caught by his earlier opponent and posse, leading to now.

the gryffindor ducked the older kids chasing after him, slipping with a practiced ease honed from running away back at the orphanage into the library. he knew that professor stormcrow didn't tolerate disruptions and needless noise so he as safe at least for a little while. he disappeared along the bookcases for a minute, using the collar of his shirt to mop at the blood dripping from his nose as he meandered through lines and lines of books. it was when he turned a corner that he spotted charlie at a table.

his potions tutor looked half asleep, but seemed to be studying anyhow. finn, figuring that the ravenclaw's sleepiness meant that he was in ample need of a good distraction, bounded over, dropping into the chair across from his... friend? acquaintance? whatever. he dropped into the chair across from charlie and grinned wickedly, eyes burning a bright yellow in his glee.

"'lo charlie!" he chirped, only just remembering that he needed to watch his tone. "what'cha studyin?" he asked a moment, later peering over to look at the brunette's notes.

Charlie was no stranger to violence. He hadn't been bullied in school, though. He usually stayed out of people's way, like he did now at Hogwarts. He always busied himself with other, more 'productive' things. Really, he would have been a good target, if it weren't for the fact that he had a sharp tongue hidden behind his calm and quiet facade. But that didn't help him at home. It mostly just got him into even more trouble. He quickly learned not to talk back, both for his safety and his sibling's.

But those were times he tried not to ponder on, especially while he was preoccupied with his school work. He wasn't fond of chaos, and that was the excuse he used to avoid Finn Hobbes. He was an annoying brat, who never knew when to close his damn trap and listen to orders. The two had never really been on the best terms, with Charlie always snapping at him, and yet he always came crawling back. Surprisingly, their little tussles had never erupted into anything more.

So, it was understandable how he rolled his eyes as the boy in question appeared. Nestled more towards the back of the library, he hadn't seen him come in, but now wished he had so he could have made a get-away. Alas, he was stuck and had to deal with him, on top of the exhaustion tugging at his eyes.

"What kind of trouble are you getting into now, asshole?" he asked, ignoring Finn's light-hearted question. Instead, he focused on what remained of his earlier fight, the marks on his face evidence enough. He hated that he was almost concerned for the idiot. He felt like he was supposed to dislike him, not to mention the fact that all of the shit he got into was his own fault. So why the hell did he care?

Cameron doesn't usually frequent the library, it doesn't have an atmosphere that she appreciates, not that there's anything wrong with liking the quiet, but it's just not her kind of thing. Even if she's trying to get some homework done, she'd much rather curl up in a corner of the Slytherin common room, allowing the white noise of conversation to rush over her. Cameron works better with ambient noise than she does with the complete absence of it.

Be that as it may, sometimes there's assigned reading, which means she has to actually step foot in the library to find the book that she needs. Cameron's not that well-versed with where things are placed, and she's not about to ask Professor Stormcrow where the Potions section is, that would be a bad decision. It figures that there'll be assigned reading on the one subject she doesn't do that well in, luck has never really been on her side when it comes to studies.

So, here she is, padding quietly between the shelves and muttering under her breath about herbs and brewing times and that essay she still hasn't started. Cameron needs to try and stop getting detentions for late homework and learn to ask for extensions, even though she doesn't do well with authority on a whole. She's just crossing the aisle into another section of the library when a flurry of voices causes her to pause, take a step back, and poke her head out from between the books.

"Hey guys, mind keeping it down? Don't want Stormcrow to come over." Cameron allows her voice to raise just enough to float over to the two boys, a loud whisper that, hopefully, won't carry all the way to the front of the library. She doesn't really know who these two are, but not getting Stormcrow's attention is beneficial for all three of them, so she's hoping that they don't yell at her for this, which will almost certainly get them all kicked out.

it was both easy and very very true to say that finn and chaos went hand in hand. seemed that where ever the fourth year went, trouble was soon to follow if it didn't arrive with him. and yeah, most of it was his own fault. he was scrawny and short and had a temper that lit faster than wood drenched in gasoline. add to that his apparent 'inability' to shut his mouth and well, you had a kid that was both a perfect target and an insufferable nuisance.

the two had never really been best friends, charlie involved in his work and finn involved in some type of mischief, and got into their fair share of spats but finn always came loping back around. it was too much fun not to for the gryffindor. riling up the ravenclaw was delightfully easy and their back and forth was just fun.

if finn was bothered by charlie's apparent annoyance at him hanging around, he didn't show it, only grinning wider as the brunette returned his question with a question, which honestly, how rude. "trouble?" finn said, eyes twinkling in amusement as he placed a hand to his chest in feigned outrage, "me? why how dare you, caldwell? i'm a goddamn saint, i never get into trouble."

sure that would earn him a snort or something, the gryffindor pushed out a foot in an attempt to nudge charlie's, letting him know that he wasn't getting away with skipping over finn's question, the metamorphmagus tilting his head with an expectant stare. "you never answered my question, nerd."

he stopped messing around and straightened up at cameron's words, "sorry about that," he called in a similarly loud whisper back with a slightly apologetic wave, wincing at the thought of professor stormcrow snapping at them or worse, kicking them out altogether. he recognized cameron, having seen her at the slytherin table during meals and what not, but he'd never officially met her. he'd never officially met a lot of slytherins, which seemed odd considering that his brother was one, but then again he'd met very few hufflepuffs and his sister was one of those.

anyway, he waved cam over, figuring that now was the perfect time to meet her. if nothing else, he could at least ask her what she was working on. maybe they could all work together or something, not that finn would be doing any actual work of course. he didn't have his books, for one, and for two, any time he could spend avoiding potions, he did.

Charlie huffed out of his nose, rolling his eyes at the other boy's display. Sometimes he truly wondered how he had ended up hanging around with someone like Finn. It wasn't like he did it willingly, he just stuck around, and in the end he just accepted that he wouldn't be getting rid of him so easily. Maybe it was even a little entertaining, though he'd never admit it. It was a nice distraction from all the work that often plagued him.

"Oh, of course you are, Hobbes," he grumbled back, his tone full of almost playful venom, though he kept his expression hard. Rubbing at his eye with his knuckle, he simply shrugged and glanced down at the textbook laid on the table. The letters were all starting to blur together, no longer making sense in his sleepiness.

Picking his gaze back up, the male narrows his eyes at the tap against his foot, a smug smirk coming to his face as he comes up with something to catch him. "Since you're so interested, I'm studying what you're supposed to be. When are you finally gonna take it seriously?" He didn't much care whether he got good grades or not. Or maybe he did. He wasn't sure of much these days anymore. All he knew was that he was at least willing to tutor him, despite his blatant disinterest, for whatever damn reason.

He thought about threatening to stop the tutoring unless he got his act together, but then was stopped by a voice, his eyes trailing over until they settled on Cameron. He isn't familiar with her, though he can probably say that he's seen glimpses of her around the school. There aren't many people he hasn't at least seen before. But he heeds her advice, visibly grimacing at the thought of the old crow. He had never really gotten into trouble with him, and he wasn't too eager to now, either.

It figures the first time that she steps into the library in what's probably been months is when she finds herself teetering on the edge of getting intro trouble, again. In many ways, she's similar to Finn, except instead of a hot temper and a penchant to run her mouth, Cameron instead has a love for drama, and stirring the pot. If she can't find trouble, then she'll make it, needs to be backed into a corner with her fists flying in order to feel alive.

As can be imagined, the staff at this school are all sick of running into a fight just to find her standing in the corner, cheering people on, the obvious instigator of the whole mess. If she thought about it a little, which she doesn't, Cameron would realize that this affinity she has for creating problems could just as easily lend itself to solving them, but erasing trouble isn't her kind of thing, and besides, what's life without a little adventure?

She nods at Finn's apology, ready to move on, but then he waves her over and, well, if she can avoid having to read this dastardly book about herbs and their properties under the full moon or whatever nonsense the assigned text is about, then she will. Cameron slides over easily, taking one of the wooden chairs, spinning it around, and sitting down, blue eyes shining with just barely concealed mischief. "What're you guys up to? Nothing good, from the looks of it." Or, you know, they could just be doing homework, to each their own.

it was amusing beyond words how charlie reacted almost exactly as finn would've expected, rolling his eyes. he could tell that for all his feigning intense annoyance and dislike that the ravenclaw wasn't really bothered by him. or at least, not bothered enough to do anything about it and that was good enough for him.

at the other's words, the gryffindor simply grinned and tossed the other a wink that seemed like it should've been coming from mason for how easily it was delivered, though maybe it was just because it was charlie and finn adored bothering charlie. it was his favourite past time at this point.

at the dreaded mention of potions, because honestly what else could charlie be talking about, the gryffindor puffed out his cheeks and leveled the fifth year with a look that said exactly what he thought about that without missing a beat.

he clicked his tongue, a bit annoyed that charlie thought he didn't take his schoolwork seriously. i mean, he didn't really, but he had the procrastinator's gift and a fear of failure that kept him well above the line of passing, "i take it plenty seriously." he defended himself. "potions is just... really fucking boring, also really hard."

he could see charlie raring up to go at him, probably about to scold him yet again, but cameron had interrupted them with her warning and dreading another lecture, he'd invited her over. what he hadn't expected was for her to take them up on it and more than that, sit with them. at first, the teen was about to give a serious answer, but taking in the mischievous glint in her eye, finn grinned widely. "who us? well, charles my good nerd friend here is studying and i'm..." he up-ended his statement with a shrug.

what was he doing here? it was a combo of hiding from bullies and messing with charlie, but neither of those seemed quite right to relay so instead, the gryff offered his name, "i'm finn."

The ravenclaw had come to the library for a sense of quiet and calm, but now, it seemed as if he would be getting the opposite. Of course, he didn't find the pestering that funny at all, but it did keep him from falling asleep right then and there. Not to mention he enjoyed the moments where he got under Finn's skin instead of the other way around.

He folded his arms across his chest, pleased with the reaction he had gotten. He was very aware of the trouble he had with potions, which was why he had volunteered to help him in the first place. It was annoying work, especially when he refused to study on his own time, but it gave him something to do in his extra time. Really, he doubted his teachings had any effect on him. It probably just went into one ear and out the other.

"I told you not to call me that," Charlie quickly grows defensive at the mention of his full name. He hated being called that, and would have expected the other boy to understand, since he had the same dislike for his own name. He knew he was only doing it to test his patience, but he was still genuinely ticked off.

Turning to Cameron, he studied her for a moment, unsure if she'd end up as another bother like Finn. Still, he continued with the conversation. "Trying to study, anyways, until he came along and decided to be annoying," he motioned towards his 'friend' as he spoke. "Just call me Charlie. That's what I prefer," he may or may not have shot an accusing glance at Finn.

The mention of Potions is enough to get her to sigh (softly, of course) and slump onto the table, hiding her face in her arms. Truly, it is a dreadful subject, a deadly combination of math and science, two things that Cameron had never excelled it, not even back in Muggle school. She's always been more of an arts junkie, doing well in languages and humanities, rather than subjects that dealt with numbers, and measurements, and formulas. Coming to Hogwarts had always been about escaping the numbers, but it seemed like they were going to haunt her for the rest of her days.

"Urgh, tell me about it," she says, voice muffled because she's still got her head down, but Cameron sits up after a second, rolling her eyes in annoyance. "I just don't get it, you know? Stir three times, it says, so I do that, and then the cauldron bursts into flames." Truth be told, maybe she might've stirred in the wrong direction, but stirring is stirring, goddamnit, why are there directions? Clockwise, counter-clockwise, soup isn't going to taste any better, why is it any different with Potions?

Cameron responds to Finn's grin with an answering smile of her own, figuring that he seemed like a good kid. "I'm Cameron," she says, and then her voice turns flinty, just on the wrong side of dangerous. "Just Cameron, no nicknames or whatever else." She hated it when people took it upon themselves to shorten her name, if they were too lazy to use her actual, proper, full name, then she was too lazy to speak to them. easy as that.

She watches Finn and Charlie's interactions with poorly disguised amusement, deciding that talking to these two young lads is way better use of her time than reading about Potions, but of course, lots of things are better than Potions, she could fill the entire library with books about things that are better than Potions. "Well then, Charlie, it's nice to meet you." Cameron pauses, turning so she's addressing both boys instead of just the one. "Both," she adds, "it's nice to meet you both."

At least one out of the three of them were busy doing productive things like keeping up with grades, but in Cameron's book, it was majority wins, and it seemed like both her and Finn were here to have a little fun.

"Now, what would you be doing if you weren't being boring and whittling away the daylight in this musky old library?"

Things with formulas and equations had always come easily to Charlie. He didn't necessarily like math or it's scientific counterpart, but he still enjoyed how things just came together like they did, numbers and orders coming naturally to him. He was among a lucky few who actually had little trouble with such things.

He watches them discuss their mutual hate towards the class, his book glaring up at him with it's scrawling sentences and paragraphs. Finally the pounding at the back of his skull becomes too much and he shuts it. Sleepily turning to Cameron as she addressed him, it took him a minute to realize what she had just said. When it did, he couldn't bring himself to be agitated with what seemed like an attempt to annoy him further.

"Does it really matter? Besides, I'm fine with being 'boring,'" he shrugs his shoulders slightly. He doesn't really mind what others may think of him. He only does what he thinks he should, and sticks to it. A life of routine had always been comforting to him. "What are you doing here, anyways? If it's so uninteresting to you," he shoves his books into his bag as he asks, not really that curious.

as anyone who knew finn well would tell you, finding peace and quiet anywhere that finn was in general proximity to was... well, it was fucking difficult. he was loud and rather mischievous and didn't exactly know the meaning of the words settle down, but in all his fun, he hadn't meant to piss off charlie for real. he'd thought charlie would just toss back a 'finnegan' and something else snide.

in silent apology he tapped his foot against the other's again. little did charlie know, finn truly did appreciate the potions help. he may not have always showed it and he admittedly, didn't do much when it came to studying, but the tutoring was helping even if he spent most of it staring at the other rather than actually learning sometimes.

hell, with the way things were going, finn thought he might actually to squeak by with an o. he doubted it and was praying for an a, but miracles happened sometimes.

he returned the other's glare with shrug, unfazed. there were few things in this world that were actually scary when you put them in comparison to people like okeana and set them up next to her glares. at cam's soft sigh, finn perked back up. at least someone at this table had an understanding. "right?" the gryff complained. "it doesn't make any sense! you can do exactly what the instructions say and still end up with a cauldron ready to explode, it's dumb."

"cameron, then." finn said with a shrug, understanding. he shortened his name because really mom what kind of name was finnegan???, but not all of the nicknames he had (looking at you, shitface) were preferable. at her question the gryffindor opened his mouth, cut off then by charlie. "nice meeting you too."

"of course it matters." he said easily, frowning as charlie called himself boring. finn didn't think that, he actually thought the opposite, even though he teased his friend incessantly about being a nerd or whatever. "there's gotta be something you like to do other than sticking your nose in a book, right?"

to cameron he said, "if it were me, i'd probably be trying to find something fun to do." he thought for a bit and then added, "or y'know, like flying out on the pitch!" though he wasn't nearly as much of a quidditch fanatic as his brother, finn adored flying. there was nothing more thrilling than zooming through the air.

curious at cam's answer, since he'd already given his own (even if it was more avoidance than actual answering), the gryff turned his ever changing stare on her. he'd figured that she was doing homework, the same as charlie.

Cameron would wager that she's got about as much energy as Finn has, and the same penchant for seeking out drama, but she's a lot less explosive about it, and the process by which she goes looking for trouble is a little different. It could boil down to who they are by nature (and, she supposes, she could make an argument about their different houses) but Cameron likes to think that the ends justify the means. It doesn't matter which route she takes as long as she ends up where she meant to.

Cameron watches the two boys with mild interest, and not for the first time she wonders how they know each other. It certainly isn't your run-of-the-mill friendship, in fact it seemed as if Charlie thought Finn was being a nuisance most of the time. They still acted like friends, though, albeit unconventional ones. She's not exactly sure of their history, but if Cameron's a sucker for anything, it's drama, especially if it's drama that doesn't pertain to her, so she's going to be keeping an eye on these kids in the future.

She nods, satisfied, when Finn addresses her by her full name. Good, so she doesn't have to get into that whole debacle, it's nice when someone knows you're being serious and doesn't try to fight you on it. Cameron frowns at Charlie's answer; clearly she's struck a nerve when she hadn't meant to, whoops. Finn falls in to save the day, and she's grateful that his gentle retort clears some of the tension in the air, however messy, it does the job.

When Finn mentions flying, Cameron grins, happy that they're talking about something she's familiar with. "Oh man, I love flying! Feels like freedom, yeah?" She's not going to go into too much detail, neither of these boys need to hear her sob story, but it's nice to be able to talk about something she enjoys with a friend. "Are you gonna try out for Quidditch teams when the notice goes up?"

Clearly, she is aware that she should go look for the book, or at least quietly accio it, but the Potions reading can wait 'til later, or hopefully, 'til never, she can totally scrape by if she asks someone in her class for notes, right? Totally.

finn hadn't quite been born on a broom as his new friend seemed to have been, or like mase was, but flying was something he was something he was good at and felt rather proud of, especially considering that he there was a time where he'd been afraid to go near a broom.

that was long in the past though and now he was about as well-versed a flyer as his brother. finn moved at top speed, second only to mason probably, delighting in tricks and fast movements and daring turns and twists and leaps. anything to get the rush.

"it does," he agreed with cameron brightly, thinking of the feeling that came with the wind on his face and in his hair, howling in his ears, drowning out thoughts good and bad. there was nothing like it and he told her that, "heh, don't think there's a better feeling, if i'm honest."

"hell yeah!" he agreed with enthusiasm, momentarily forgetting again where he was as he raised his voice. "i'm gonna be gryffindor's chaser! what about you?"
