some say the world will end in fire

StarClan

Pyrestar
RiverClan Leader || Tom || 54 Moons

In his dreams Pyrestar wanders for a long time. He's walking along the outer edge of the river, but its filled with fire.

The bright, fiery embers that carry on the wind are comforting, familiar. He follows their movements through the air, flickering bright before going out.

A single rose petal floats by, twirling on the slight summer breeze. Somehow it seems out of place, the color too bright, too clean for the dusty, cracked earth around him. It’s joined by several others, all spinning and turning on a melody that he cannot hear, a dance both improvised and choreographed.

The dark tom follows the wind borne petals, one paw in front of the other, quietly watching the petals as they whisper by, gifting secrets spoken in tongues he cannot understand. He approaches a city, one that he recognizes with painfully familiarity. The buildings are long-abandoned, detached from the earth, their framework suspended in the silent air as rubble and broken glass floats in scattered patterns around them. The floating structures move slightly, some drifting further upwards, some slowly coming down.

The buildings on the way to the lab, the nightmare. The wayward petals give way to full-blown flowers, red roses lying in the street, fresh and bright in the dirty grays of the city. Pyrestar follows the shaky line of flowers winding through the main road to the floating ruins of a broken skyscraper.

Rusted steel beams hover in staggered lines like stairs, leading upwards towards a chunk of mangled debris. There’s a cat standing there, facing away from him, watching the sky and clad in stars. Bright, swirling galaxies fill the horizon, bits and pieces of them glitching in and out of existence, their movement halting, catching, as if run by gears that didn’t quite fit together right.

He ascends the beams, one by one. They dip slightly under his weight, but remain steady in their place. His paws do not falter as he gradually climbs upward.

He reaches the top, and is met with a small garden of beautiful red roses. There are no vines, no thorns, only the flowers, their outer petals slowly peeling off and fluttering away in the breeze.

The cat sitting in front of him plucks a rose calmly, gently holds it up to his face, inhaling its fragrance with a contented hum. Pyrestar watches the motion intently as a wistful, faraway expression passes over the other feline’s face.

“You could paint the town red.” He comments. The words fall from his lips before he even realizes he’s speaking, as if, perhaps, they were always meant to be said.

The starry cat exhales gently, then lets the rose catch the wind and drift away, petals peeling off piece by piece.

“You already have.”

The cat turns, what Pyrestar thought were more rose petals are blood. In fact, all of the roses are blood now as they seemingly melt off of bushes into puddles on the ground. The StarClanner's face is dripping blood from the eyes, nose, ears, but she's smiling as if not noticing.

Pyrestar steps back in alarm, nearly tripping over his own tail, but the building has shrunk without his knowledge and his back paw steps off into air and he's falling-falling-falling down into the pool of blood roses that now filled the city. He opens his mouth to scream but too late, he hits the liquid and the blood fills his lungs. The sharp, sweet scent of it all floods his senses and he drowns in it.

Lurching awake he's met with the freezing cold cage around him.

What time was it? What day? What season? It had all blended together upon arriving here, he honestly could not begin to guess how long he'd been trapped here behind cold steel and chilled air, how long he'd been away from his clan who, no doubt, probably moved on by now.

Pyrestar lifted his head slowly from the metal flooring of the crate, the prickling sensation of stiff fur along his head and side made him inwardly grimace-the two-legs had done it, put a blade to him that cut not skin but his pelt and a clean swath ran from neck to side where they could put their sharp sticks and wires without tangling in his fur. It was awful, he felt exposed, but his biting and his claws had done nothing to put them off harassing him aside from more abuse battered across his frame.

Slowly, gradually, the fight left him as time began to drag on. He would die here, of that he was certain, and for once he despised the additional lives StarClan granted him. There was no reprieve from this hell.

i'm in a world, stuck in reverse

SkyClan

Deep in the pit of his stomach, his anxiety was beginning to stir as the back of his throat tingled and his mouth dried out. This was not the time or place to retch in front of both his most able warriors and the warriors of an allied clan. Equinoxstar's outward appearance was of confidence, a facade hiding what he was really feeling, but his paw steps were growing shaky and he had to find himself making the conscious decision to pick up a leg and place it down in front of him. Just one step at a time was slow progress, but he still lead the troop as they neared the edge of the facility.

It backed onto the forest edges, obviously so they could easily execute their torturous plans for the clan cats with minimal disturbance. Both his ears were straining forward, as the collar around his neck seemed to tighten, almost pulled towards the laboratory as it had been when the magnets held by the vile naked creatures passed over it. Letting out a slow exhale, he stopped and glanced back to Stonestep. They were hear now, the door that had lead to their freedom, while windowless, had a ring of white around it from where the sickly fluorescent light broke through the cracks. "This is it."

There was no betraying his fear behind that statement. Voice almost breaking as he said it, he felt foolish for allowing himself to agree on such a dangerous trip, one where if he flash backed even once he would almost be catatonic from the experience. Putting the other SkyClanners at risk, bringing them back to a place that served as somewhere worse than hell. Involuntarily, he found himself trembling but he steeled his gaze. "My plan... I guess... Let me be recaptured. While they're occupied with me and the door is open, everyone else slip through between their legs. Attacking them outright would serve to only anger them, possibly placing our homes in further danger if they decide they're fed up with dealing with us." That entire paragraph was hard to force out and he took many unnecessary pauses, but he made sure to lock eyes with Stonestep that he was dead serious. Despite being absolutely paralysed with fear.

They would want back their prized serval child anyway.

Nothing can be done without hope and confidence.

RiverClan

As they approached the lab, Pebblepaw's usual bouncy walk ceased and became the regular way of stepping. The reality of this place was starting to set in. Pebblepaw hadn't ever been here before, but these walls that trapped Pyrestar and other unfortunate cats...the stiff atmosphere around here...Pebblepaw shivered. She never considered herself a nervous cat - she was usually quie optimistic and extroverted and tried not to worry about anything too much - but she'd be lying if she said she wasn't feeling a bit anxious right now.

She shook her thick white pelt as though it would shake her fear away. "Sounds..good," she meowed, trying her best to sound confident. The SkyClan leader had been looking to Stonestep, but she felt the need to respond.

Though, concerned for Equinoxstar's plan to be captured, but she decided not to argue and just accept it. He was a leader, he knew what was best, didn't he?

Stonestep had followed them a bit further than planned; his cracked ribs, though healed, meant he wasn't planning on entering. He had been caught up in following Equinoxstar however and couldn't leave now, not so close to their leader. He met the serval's gaze and nodded slowly, green eyes grim. "If you're sure," he meowed, words measured with caution despite his inner gratefulness. "Be safe, everyone. I will see you all on the other side." If he had to go in there himself to rescue them, he would.

LOCAL SWEET-HEART

RiverClan

Sylvester stayed close behind the group, mostly sticking to Stonestep's side in case he needed help walking with his ribs. He'd try to strike up conversation every now and then, trying to keep the mood light despite where they were heading, though it was mostly to keep his own mind off it, too. Dread had long settled in his stomach and it was making him nauseous. Pausing his paw-steps as they did, his eyes drifted towards what they were looking at. He had lived around humans his whole life, whether it be in their home or in the shared streets. He thought he had them figured out, but really, he didn't. They all had such weird ways and sometimes, they were downright cruel.

He'd heard the lab being mentioned in camp, but he'd never really asked what went on in there. While it seemed the Skyclanners knew, he wasn't sure if they'd be so willing to talk about it. It was nice enough of them to just bring them here. "Alright. If you're sure," he replied to the leader, turning to their deputy with a nod. Hopefully he would be careful, and he was confident he would be.

Smallstorm

She-cat | Warrior | 11 moons

Smallstorm was absolutely livid about being back here at the lab. The fur along her spine rose as the building came into view. Equinoxstar had forced her to go on the rescue mission because she was small and she could get into small spaces if they needed.
As Equinoxstar spoke her face twisted into confused anger. How could he even think about letting himself get re-captured? Possibly for good! The idea was completely mouse brained! And all for what? Another clan who seemed to have Stonestep.
That was enough. "Whatever, its your funeral." She glared at Equinoxstar before ducking behind a bush waiting for the plan to start

While the other clan mates took to the ground, stalking through the undergrowth of foliage and bushes to keep themselves hidden, Tigerdusk was in the trees. Despite his heavy body weight of his Maine coon heritage, he moved with grace and was nimble on his paws, hopping from each branch to the next. Brown eyes stared out ahead, scanning the immediately surroundings as the group followed his tree bound path towards the two-legs camp. From his high position in the leaf covered trees, the older warrior was able to see the large, closed-off building of the lab before the others. Fur standing on end, the Tom stopped on a thick branch, staring down the camp as he felt his heart beat quicken.

Each step he made towards the Starclan - forsaken area was harder then the last. Each leap that carried him to anothe branch had his muscles proteating, his mind screaming for the Tom to turn and run back to Skyclan. He could not, though. It meant abandoning his clanmates to the two-legs as well as the Riverclan's leader. He could not allow that to happen.

As they came to the cusp of the forest, Tigerdusk leaped down from his high perch with practiced ease, landing beside Smallstorm with silent paws, just barely coming down in time to hear Equinoxstar's plan. His ears went back and the older Tom looked to the taller Serval with worry. "I understand it is not my say but, please, Equinoxstar, reconsider. What if we aren't able to get you back? I understand that you were born here but I refuse to let my leader go alone." He paused before his next words, his heart beat quickening in his chest with each syllable. "At least allow me to get captured with you. Two distractions is better than one." He was scared of the two-legs that was for sure, but he was more scared of losing his leader to them to not help.

his throat was dry and he felt on edge. cloudrunner was on edge, and for good reason too. his pale furred body was tense, and it showed with every movement as he dragged his paws forwars. the toms expression was stone; cloudrunner refused to look weak in this moment. while every fiber in his body, every molecule he was made up of was begging him to turn back. where? home. he wanted to be home in skyclan; where he could wake up to the sunrise. to those annoying hawks above his head. to smallstorms quick tongue and ashwhiskers chiding tone whenever he said something he shouldn't have. to tigerdusks smile when they were paired for a patrol. the scent of peppernose's herbs whenever he passed the medicine den.

this was not a home. this was a maze of cold hearted monsters and even colder cages that chewed you up and spat you out. cloudrunner didn't dare look at anyone around him. he didn't want to think of the that this could be the last time he saw any of them. even the riverclanners that had dragged him here. they needed their help, he had to remind himself. being in their paws he might have done the same... it was all too much to handle, though. was this really how one, or more of them could die? would this be how he was killed? by the very thing he fought to avoid for so long? the thought made him choke up a little, which he covered up with a cough.

they were here before cloudrunner could completely gather his thoughts or formulate a plan to connect with equinoxstar. they were here and now it hurt. he could feel those pains again. the stabs and jabs and prodding all over his body and it made his fur bristle from the muscle memory. when equinoxstar spoke he was dragged from his frozen appearance and his head sharply turned in the leaders direction. no.. no he looked. his stone-faced expression completely fell and the warrior was completely filled with dread. this was not a situation he ever wanted to be in... yet he was.

"tigerdusk..." he began, voice breaking. "we can't afford to lose you both... please..." he was weak. he was letting them see he was weak and he didn't care. he loved his clanmates too much. love. he wasn't afraid to say it, but by the stars did he not want to ever feel the loss of more clanmates today.

the white tom took in another deep breath, trying to calm himself. he refused to cry, but he would not lose his mind over this. he couldn't. "just... stick with the original plan. it's safer."

i'm in a world, stuck in reverse

SkyClan

There were gentle murmurings of agreement throughout the crowd. It didn't anger him, he was the one who had offered up the radical suggestion, but he found himself just the slightest bit disappointed that no one had anything else to say. Right now, he truly was the leader, he had to stick by his decisions and know that everyone would support him, even if he didn't want the support. The three SkyClan cats brought up the rear, after he'd been spear heading the group and of course it was Smallstorm's biting, unsympathetic expression that was first out. Rather than respond, he just remained silent and listened to Tigerdusk offer his own body.

Cloudrunner was terrified, just as Equinoxstar was, but he made no effort to hide it and he stepped back a few paces, away from the otherworldly door, so he might lay his tail across the man's back. The warrior had echoed his concerns, so he looked to the tiger pelted male once more, "You can't come with me. You must stay with the others and help guide them through to where the holding cages are kept. That's an order." Before anyone else could interject with anything, he ushered for them to hide among the bushes as he boldly made his way to the door. Again the air was sucked from his lungs. White noise began to roar in his ears and he let out some sort of garbled screech to alert the laboratory agents to his arrival. They would remember it, the same high pitched shriek of pain and suffering they had inflicted on him all his life.

There was the sound of locks clicking, before a hand appeared around the rim of the doorway as it was pushed open. Too white clad men stood there, staring down in almost disbelief at the sight of the collared serval. One spoke harshly to the other before he scarpered away down the hall. Equinox was frozen in place, his tail tucked beneath his body as his ears flattened. This wasn't going well, he felt his limbs begin to lock up, the adrenalin instinctively heading towards flight rather than fight. By sheer will, he forced the opposite reaction and he felt the rage. Hot, molten rage at what they had subjected himself and his sister too. It was in a swift movement that he darted up to the man as though readily receiving his capture, before he pranced away a few steps. The man followed, as was with these dumb lumbering two-legs. Three more figures came running up the corridor with a cage before they too stepped outside the door. It was clear.

"GO," he screeched as he weaved between the grasping hands and dog poles.

Stonestep didn't have much time to caution Equinoxstar further (though it seemed that the serval was very set on this course of action, unable to be reset) before he was bolting to the twoleg door and yowling for them to come. Arrive they did, leaning down with grasping paws - he feared for a second that they had SkyClan's leader, frozen as he was among their treelike legs, but then the serval was running, toting a group of five twolegs on his tail. "Go!" he hissed in a voice barely loud enough to be heard, echoing Equinox; for now, the RiverClan deputy crouched under a bush, ready to watch and act as reinforcements. If only his ribs were a week more healed...!

Imediately, without a thought, Pebblepaw raced forward, dashing between a twoleg's legs.

As her paws smacked agaisnt the hard lab floor, she took a quick glance over her shoulder to see if the rest of the patrol was behind her. What would become of Equinoxstar? Would he be able to escape after he was caught? Of course he will. And if he can't do it on his own, we'll help him.

The older warrior looked back towards Cloudrunner, one ear flicking backwards as he voiced his concern for the two of them. He had never seen the male break from the stony visage that he always had on. Throughout all the patrols that they had gone on together, Tigerdusk couldn't put together the image of the male like he was now. He was always calculative, smiling with the multitude of clanmates. For once, he openly showed how terrified he was and it had the male's heart clenching in his chest. Yet, he didn't pull back from his suggestion of becoming captured as well, until...Equinoxstar denied him the chance. He opened his mouth to once again protest but, before he could, the serval was off towards the door, leaving the male to give a short sigh. "We'll come back for you if anything happens...don't worry..." The words were whispered under his breath as he crouched down into the bushes to watch, brown gaze unmoving as two-legs came out of the camp to chase down their leader.

Muscles tense and tail twitching in anticipation, as soon as their leader called out for the rest of them to go, the springs were released. Tigerdusk burst out of the bush with leaves following after him, paws beating against the ground as he slipped past one of the two-legs and into the cold stone floor of the two-leg encampment. He wanted to hesitate, to look back and check to see if his leader was okay, but knew that they had a mission to do. Easily catching up with the white-furred apprentice of Pebblepaw, the tiger-striped male nudged her towards a turn coming up. "That way." It was hissed lowly to the apprentice, skidding with slipping paws in order to make the turn and continue. "The dens are near the back." With the two being out of the main hall, the tom took a chance to look back, looking to see if anyone else followed. Whether they did or not, a large door was coming up rather soon, cracked open by a two-leg who was in a hurry to get to the front with those weird sticks and threads.

"There! They must not have closed it, thank Starclan." He slowed to a stop at the metal door, nearly skidding into the slightly open wall. "All we got to do is open it enough to get in." The tom carefully stepped forward, gaze flicking behind the small group as he swore his heart beat increase against his chest. What if they didn't have eough time? What if Equinoxstar couldn't hold them off long enough? Breathing in, Tigerdusk forced himself to calm, hooking his paw in the small crack and attempting to pull it with all the strength he could. The moving wall seemed to inch towards him before stopping. The male hissed, tail lashing before he hooked his other paw against it and kicked at the floor with his back legs in order to pry open the heavy moving wall enough for them to fit through. He looked towards Pebblepaw and the rest of the group. "Move! Find your leader and come back out fast. I'll keep watch for two-legs."

Pyrestar
RiverClan Leader || Tom || 54 Moons

Turpentine and sterility, that's all he smelled but there was nothing there to show evidence of either. Acquisition, his blood pounded in his head like an angry war drum; sounds of battle-sounds of chaos. He almost felt as if he could scent RiverClan somewhere in these vast halls.

If he closed his eyes he could see his heart fluttering in the form of a red pulse. Eyes were windows to the soul, what did his show? He was once told they looked like reflections of the sun itself, a shade of orange burning brightly. He supposed that was fitting. You couldn't see his soul in them, it only showed you yourself reflected back.

The joke is I don't have a soul.

He had stars in his eyes and the regrets of more lives than he held lit and burning in his chest. A word from his lips could put the deepest fear in you, a flick of his wrist devotion. He was a bright burning flame and terrible in his heartbreak and he wanted something real, something in his paws he could crush as he felt so inside.

Move the pain outward where he could control it, move it so he could keep it contained, because inside it just festered like an infection.

He wonders, briefly, if he was put on this earth to simply destroy everything he touched. Like some sort of plague to this world. His paws left behind nothing but pieces and regrets and he hated himself for it. Would anyone miss him?

A noise. Clatter. The scent now sang through the air and he attempted to lift his head only to find the weight of it all dragging him down. That WAS RiverClan he scented, and another, SkyClan? Why? Why were they back?

The dark tom folded himself into a ball, one paw reaching through the wire mesh of the cage-stretched out agonizingly toward the source of the smell.

His clan had come for him-it was almost more than he could bare.

"I'm sorry...I'm s...so sorry..." The paw fell limp, his body pulled lighter than air-like he was stars. The tom closed his eyes, when they arrived he would not open them again.

Wasted effort, but appreciated-his regrets were deep but at least....at least he knew he'd be put to rest back in the home he had so fiercely guarded as if it held all his secrets.

Pebblepaw gave the SkyClan warrior a brisk nod before dashing foward, the cold, hard floor smacking the pads of her paws as she moved.

Her gaze scanned the room. Where is he...where is he... First, she caught his scent and the spotted his black form inside of a crate. There!

"We're coming Pyrestar! We're coming to save you!" She yowled loudly, racing towards his cage. She felt a chill up her spine at the thought of being confined to one of these prisons...

The RiverClan leader didn't do so much as look up at her words. She pawed at the crate.
"We don't have much time, Pyrestar - wake up!"

His breathing was quiet - no it was nonexistent...a deathly smell flooded Pebblepaw's senses. Pyrestar...he was dead...
She staggered backwards in horror. No.

A wail rose up in her throat, "Pyestar - he isn't moving!"
