FORGET WHO YOU ARE

ThunderClan

coalstep's pained screech jerked jack from the fog that he'd been in, exhaustion draining from him in a flood of explosive energy as he pulled his paws from where he'd been scraping a sleeping dip into the dirt and looked up, stomach clenching in fear as he looked at his paws. there was a lot of blood on them from his life in the city, and if didn't get it together there was about to plenty more. the thought kicked him back into gear, settling the young tom back into his old ways as the don.

with a flash of his old authority from having kept tabs on a group of rogues, he nodded quickly at duke, "stay here and get out of sight if you can. if we're not back by dawn, assume the worst and head for the city on your own. i knew a kid there, several really, but his name's oakland. he's a tall brown and white tabby, green eyes, kind of a crybaby but he ought to be able to help you find thunderclan's medicine cat." it was a bit drastic sounding and he knew that, but the reality of things was that they very well could die and he needed to make sure that they had someone to carry on and retrieve the cat they were meant to be finding.

without another word, the tom hurried in the direction, arriving right as the badger raked its claws down southskies's shoulder, blood dribbling from the wounds. the sight infuriated the black tom and he launched himself at the beast with a caterwaul, "keep your fucking claws off her!" drawing its attention with a snort and a snarl as it lumbered towards him next. he landed awkwardly, hindquarters draped over the beasts's muzzle as he scrabbled for a better grip that would get him out of harm's way at least. god this thing smelled awful.

it struck out, and he swung up, but the claws still raked up his side in a set of fairly deep scratches and he scrambled up and over the beast's head, claws finally finding shaky purchase in its back. he ripped into the beast and the badger roared and dropped back to all fours, jack's claws screaming in pain as it jarred him left and right. his left hip was burning and his chest ached but he clung fast as the beast shook him, sinking his teeth into it again and half-gagging at the taste as it finally shook him free and sent him rolling across the dirt.

he spat chunks of fur and and flesh to the ground, panting, as his golden eyes slid from the badger to southskies ready to jump into the fray again as he wondered what the beast would do next. "southskies," he breathed, pretty much the first word he'd said to her since they'd started this trip, "are you alright?"

Needless to say, this wasn't a great time to be dealing with a badger. They were a day's trip away from ThunderClan, and if any of them got seriously injured it would ultimately mean death. Even the smallest cuts could turn into infection.

Coalstep tried to think quickly. Their best strategy would be to flee; they couldn't risk fighting this thing. But badgers were fast creatures, able to keep up with cats. Especially cats who were already tuckered out from a day of walking. They could climb a tree, but he had little doubt that the badger would wander off. Damned creatures could climb, too. Not very well, he didn't think, but he didn't want to find out. But as cats, there climbing abilities were vastly superior to the badger's. If they could scale the tree quickly enough and attack from above... If the timing was right, the three might be able to crush it enough to knock the wind out or stun it, and from there it was only a matter of biting into its neck until it died. Of course, there was much risk with this, but what other choice did they have?

"Into the trees!" he commanded, gasping as the badger turned its attention back on him and narrowly missed slicing his nose. Where was Duke? The rabbit was smart; he probably had hidden himself away.

Coalstep aimed one last swipe at the badger and turned, climbing up the nearest tree with much difficultly. His front left paw didn't quite swivel as it once did, making it difficult to get good branch. He managed, though, ad hauled himself onto a low branch.

ThunderClan

her shoulder throbbed with a fierce intensity, but there was no time to look the wound over or even take a moment to settle herself. the badger was undaunted in its assault, having already wounded two of its quarry.

spiderfur appeared then, screeching bloody murder. his words eased the ache of his stinging betrayal, even if the timing for such thoughts wasn't ideal. even when indignation rose sharply on its heels, nipping at the feeling with a stinging bite. southskies didn't need someone to protect her - she was perfectly capable of taking care of herself.

it didn't occur to her that she wouldn't react in such a way had anyone else come to her rescue. if it had been coalstep in spiderfur's place she would be grateful instead of indignant. but her feelings were always muddled when it came to spiderfur, it seemed. southskies didn't always know how to react when it came to the dark furred, golden-eyed tom. sometimes she didn't even know she was reacting in a particular way until the words were out of her mouth, harsh and unforgiving in their deliverance but hurting beneath the bravado.

gritting her teeth against the pain, southskies lumbered back to her feet. spiderfur and the badger moved at lightning speed - the badger surprisingly so, given its size and awkward stature. it didn't look like a creature built for speed, but it could move on a dime if it wanted to. and that was not even accounting for the strength behind its blows.

southskies moved to spiderfur's side when he was thrown, flank pressed to his when he found his feet. relief tightened a fist around her heart, even as she fought to shove it back down.

she didn't have time to react, to respond. the badger had turned back to coalstep, satisfied or bored or tired of dealing with them. "go!" southskies shoved at spiderfur with her bad shoulder before she could think against it, gasping in pain when it jostled the deep wound. it still bled in a steady stream, the fur all down her foreleg matted with sticky red blood. "go!" she demanded again, shoving spiderfur a second time for good measure.

jack glanced over at her in surprise as she pushed her shoulder against his, the blood catching in his fur as he simply stared at the deep claw marks in southskies's shoulder, his heart lurching in his chest and his stomach clenching in both anger at the badger and fear for her. his side was still burning where he'd been scratched but they didn't feel deep, though he could tell that blood was matting the fur on his side. he heard her say something, then southskies was shoving against him with her bad shoulder, just as quickly reeling back with a pained gasp.

go! she'd snapped a second time, fixing those brilliant green eyes on him for mere seconds before she shoved him again. the motion jolted jack back to reality and he shook his head.

"fuck no." he snapped back. "i'm not leaving you here like that. you probably can't even use that leg and you're not going to do anything against that creature by yourself." he turned, scanning for a way to at least get southskies out of harm and saw coalstep scrambling up a tree, the badger chasing after him. he nodded toward a younger, smaller tree with a few branches that were placed a bit lower than the others. "come on." he said in a tone that left no room for arguments. "he's not going to be able to occupy it forever."
