The morning sun touched the hills and flatland's before anything else in the forest, unburdened by trees and brush it warmed the cracked, dry lands and the smooth, cool grass. And just outside of WindClans camp, Adderstrike rose with it. The fiery tabby stretched inside his shelter, a guarded, thoughtful look on his broad face.

He'd always enjoyed the terrain here, it was more home then any place he'd been since he'd left here so many moons ago. Being back brought him a feeling of nostalgia and rekindled anger. Adderstrike swept his cooper gaze across the den, the very same den he'd keep with his mate, Dashingwind, for their... experiments. It was easy enough to pretend she was curled, sleeping in what remained of their nest. But that brief imagination brought forth a helpless frustration and he took his eyes away. Focusing on the bright opening as he slid out onto the slopes that made up WindClans camp entrance.

The former WindClanner hadn't asked to sleep with the other warriors, he was aware he didn't belong here anymore, and he hadn't wanted to sleep with any of them. The thought of them sleeping around him was enough to make him snarl. Instead he trotted easily towards the camp entrance, where he'd agreed to meet his children and the clans leader.

Yesterday hadn't gone exactly as he had planned, but he wasn't going to let the set back ruin his carefully placed mask. He was confident that Polkapaw would leave WindClan with his father and siblings, why would he refuse?

WindClan's gossip girl!

WindClan

Smudgenose had been out on a hunting patrol when everything went down involving Polkapaw's family, but she had pressured a few apprentices into spilling the details: they had come out of nowhere and wanted to take their family member...to somewhere. Nobody was yet sure where, but by the family's refusal to mention it, the odds were poor that it was anywhere as good as the moors. It had all the makings of some fantastic gossip, and so when the tomcat that she assumed was Polkapaw's father arrived, Smudge was sitting by the entrance to camp with her eyes slitted but focused. "Welcome," she greeted, tipping her head to the tom. "I don't believe we've met. I'm Smudgenose." She didn't want to interact, just to watch, but figured it'd be awkward not to introduce herself.

This isn't how it's supposed to be!

Loner

Swift had slept curled beside her brothers that night, taking comfort in their closeness and trying not to panic at the relative closeness of all the other cats she'd yet to meet. They'd been left alone, for the most part. No one had really approached them following their first meeting yesterday. She was grateful for that isolation. It felt so much safer than being crowded like the cats of WindClan seemed to favour.

She stretched her thin legs as she rose from her siblings' nest, deciding that she couldn't lie still any longer. Other cats were beginning to stir around the camp, and it made her uneasy about lying down while all the larger cats were awake. She didn't want to feel more vulnerable; not now. Pangs of hunger hit her stomach, but she was used to that. It was only the second day without a meal; she'd be fine as long as she found something before sundown. Crow would need something sooner. That in itself was worrying. She doubted Adderstrike would stop long enough for them to hunt for themselves and she'd never hunted rabbits before. Could she even hunt here?

She glanced back to the soft, spotted pelt of their brother. Polkapaw might know a place nearby. Before that thought could truly settle with her, her nose twitched with a familiar scent. It was a scent that brought both security and terror to mind. Swift turned and nosed both her brothers to rise. "He's here," she mewed nervously. "We have to get up now."

Anxiety clutched at her heart. She didn't have a plan. She had no idea what to do or how she could keep everyone together, how to keep everyone safe. It was easier to plan ahead when it was just her, Crow and Adderstrike. There was a certain predictability in their old routine, but now she had to watch for Polkapaw, too. He was brave and strong, like Adderstrike had always wanted, but she'd watched his lack of fear and submission and knew that the older tom would never allow it.

She caught sight of the torbie intervening to distract their father and Swift immediately took her chance to look for the two leading cats from yesterday. The great tom and she-cat from before had stood between them and their father. Where were they? She didn't know if they could protect them twice, but they were the only authority she'd ever known outside of Adderstrike.

It's like we're dreaming wide awake

WindClan

Nearby, Sageleaf was sitting under the Tallrock, finishing making patrol assignments for the morning. In a rare occurrence for the deputy, she hadn't immediately gone off on a hunting patrol. Adderstrike's arrival with Swiftkit and Crowkit had thrown routine for a loop. And so the thin brown torbie sat calmly, eyes slitted against the brightening sunlight.

When Adderstrike entered the camp, Sageleaf rose smoothly to her paws and gave the former warrior a short nod. Her nose twitched when she caught Swiftkit's scent, however, and her decision was made. She tore her eyes from Adderstrike and headed to intercept the small she-cat.

"Swiftkit," she said in a soft, warm voice. The deputy gave the younger cat a slow blink, trying to reassure her. "It may be common practice for elders and queens to eat first in a clan, which you may not remember, but I'm going to make an exception. Take a rabbit from the fresh kill pile and share it with your brother, alright? Crowkit, that is. Polkapaw is welcome to join you. "

With another slow blink and no hesitation to see if Swift would do as ordered, Sageleaf turned to head over and meet Adderstrike. She stopped a few tail lengths away, her posture easy and relaxed. "I hope you rested well, " she said softly. " Swiftkit and Crowkit had some valuable time to reconnect with their brother. "

The strangely patched she-cat that sat, seemingly guarding the camp, greeted him easily. Adderstrike had to wonder if the entire clan knew by now that he had returned with his children and that he’d asked Polkapaw to leave with them. On that train of thought he wondered whether his brother and sister would make appearances today, because they certainly hadn’t bothered to show themselves to their elder brother yesterday. Their disrespect bothered him but he buried the feeling, he wasn’t here for them, though if they too wanted to leave WindClan he would welcome their numbers.

But it was Polkapaw he wanted.

The red tabby father had seen his son’s strength and determination. It was true WindClan had made him soft, but Adder knew he could change that. And then perhaps Polka could toughen up his siblings!

He vaguely remembered the warrior, though was certain he hadn’t spoken much to her when he had been in WindClan. His Dashingwind had been a jealous women. Dipping his head in return he replied, his tone friendly, ”I remember you, Smudgenose, though I suppose you don’t remember me.” He laughed, a sheepish sound that broke off when he caught sight of his daughter, although for a brief moment he thought she was his mate.

Adderstrike blinked, truly startled, and then again to wisp the emotion away. It wasn’t the first time his mates’ image had flickered over Swift, though each time it startled the loner.

He watched the interaction between Sageleaf and his daughter, stomping down a rush of anger that anyone was giving his children orders other than himself. Hiding the emotion behind an easy smile. ”I did,” he meowed softly. ”And I’m glad, I can only hope their bond continues to grow when we leave.” His voice had a steely note of friendly determination, letting them all know without saying it that his offer for Polkapaw was still out there. His son hadn’t answered him, but Adder was confident the ginger and white apprentice would want to be with his family.

This isn't how it's supposed to be!

Loner

Swift's eyes went wide and round as the older she-cat approached her. She wasn't startled this time, having caught sight of her beforehand, but the long and graceful steps of the motherly deputy awed her a little bit. Would she ever look like that?

Sageleaf stood over her then, and that might have been more intimidating if it weren't for her soft tone and thoughtful expression. Her old name sounded sweet in her ears and eased the initial panic of trying to put herself between her father and her brothers. While it was true that the tabby seemed to be warning her as much as helping her, the idea that someone else would have hunted for them was so wonderfully strange that Swift couldn't find it in her to mistrust it.

They wouldn't be hungry today and that was encouraging in ways she didn't have to explain.

Her expression seemed a little brighter, the timid tortoiseshell lifting her head to stand a little taller as Sageleaf left to speak with Adderstrike. Watching the she-cat go, her gaze met her father's and she felt a glimmer of surprise to see his expression change. Her head tilted as she watched him a little longer, the posture even more like her mother than appearance alone. Then, she decided that she'd given her brothers time enough to rouse themselves from sleep; it would be safe now to find them food like the she-cat had told her.

Swift's gait was a little more lanky than Sageleaf's, as she had yet to grow into the long graceful legs that she'd inherited from her mother. The muted excitement in her heart would only be betrayed by a gentle swish of her tail and the care with which she selected a rabbit for her brothers.

Polkapaw

Tom | Apprentice | 11 moons

Sleep hadn't come easy for the spotted apprentice, thoughts raced through his mind throughout the night, scaring away an possibility of sleep that Polkapaw might've had. He kept thinking about his siblings, how much they had strayed from his memory until he was able to lay his eyes upon them again, he remembered his fathers orange fur faintly but the same security he felt as a kit when he was around had been long since diminished. He was finally able to remember what his mother looked like when he gazed into the face of his sister Swift, she held so much of her beauty and she was probably going to look exactly like her when she grew up.
The sun had peeked through the apprentice den but it wasn't until he felt Swift's nudging that he had any inclination that the morning had already arrived. He had explained to his siblings that they couldn't leave with Adderstrike again, not when he had finally gotten a chance to meet them Adderstrike had this plan to take them StarClan knows where and Polkapaw wasn't about to be seperated from his siblings again, and there was no way in hell he was leaving with Adderstrike.
Polkapaw slowly rose to his feet following Swift out, spotting his fathers familiar pelt. Polkapaw could feel anxiety gripping at his stomach however he didn't allow his face to show that he was intimidated. He needed to be strong, especially for his siblings. He couldn't help but feel proud when Sageleaf told Swift to her herself to some fresh kill and she happily obliged. Polkapaw caste a side glance toward his father, hoping to see some sort of reaction to his daughters actions, yet saw nothing except a warm smile. Polkapaw approached stopping a few tail length in front of his father.
”And I’m glad, I can only hope their bond continues to grow when we leave.” another wave of anxiety rippled throughout the apprentices stomach. Polkapaw was going to have to be the one to speak up. He was going to have to defend his siblings. He could only hope his clan-mates would be there to back him up.

WindClan's gossip girl!

WindClan

"No, I suppose not," she answered airily, making no comment about her absence from the Clan that might explain her lack of knowledge. "I don't seem to remember you leaving, either - when was that, exactly?" Time to start prying into this tom's meat, see what he was made of.

Sageleaf came over with perfect timing, interrupting the gossiping torbie and forcing Smudge to settle back into her casual positioning with a semi-grumpy expression. The deputy probably wouldn't welcome her prodding, so she resolved to sit quiet and watch whatever drama occurred next instead of risking it all for some questioning. The drama was already starting, too, with the red tom making an obvious (if veiled) statement: he was determined to have Polkapaw leave camp.

Rowanstar felt uneasy with Adderstrike in the camp. He didn't like how scared Adderstrike's children were of him, and he didn't like how Adderstrike seemed to... always know what to say. The contradictions messed with the leader - what was true? Not true? His words, even his tone and body language... all of it bespoke a change, and yet the kits were flat out terrified of him. His own siblings also hadn't seemed to show up.. why?

He approached as dawn arose, and he caught the tail end of Adderstrike's words. Rowanstar frowned. "No, Adderstrike. It's not when they leave. It's if they leave. They are WindClan born, and now that they are back home they have the option of staying here if they'd like... their own decision, not yours or you influencing them." He glanced around for the apprentices, eyeing first Swiftkit and Polkapaw, and watching as the latter approached. Making a decision, then and there, and loudly, loud enough where Swiftkit and Crowkit could hear, "Swiftkit and Crowkit may stay in WindClan if they want to. And if they chose to be here, they will face no consequences from you or anyone else." He glanced at Polkapaw, only briefly, before returning his gaze to Adderstrike. His words would stand.

This isn't how it's supposed to be!

Loner

Swift's lanky strides carried her back to where her brothers had been, though Polkapaw had inevitably wandered after Sageleaf- and their father. She still held the rabbit in her mouth as she watched him edge closer to the ginger tom. He didn't get closer than a few tail-lengths, but she overwhelmingly felt the urge to stay by him. Crow hadn't risen from their nest yet; he was safe in the den they'd slept in overnight. But she didn't know how Adderstrike would react to Polkapaw, especially if the spotted apprentice told him that he'd be staying in WindClan. Adderstrike was not a cat easily refused.

She stood stock still as she watched Polkapaw stand before their father. From here, she couldn’t see his face. She knew that he’d be nervous of Adderstrike; why wouldn’t he be? As far as she knew, everyone was at least a little fearful of the overbearing tabby. But he was also standing at the side of fully-grown cats and acting like he belonged there. It was a bizarre thing to watch, knowing that Polkapaw was leaps and bounds ahead of she and Crow in his life. He was bigger, stronger, and evidently far braver than she ever felt she would be. There was both pride and shame in that feeling; at least Polkapaw would be safe.

The tortoiseshell settled quietly into the grass near the apprentice den, tucking her paws neatly beneath her body in case she had to run, and her tail curling protectively around her side to keep from being trod on by another cat. Only when she’d decided it was safe to eat did she start digging into the rabbit that Sageleaf had allowed her.

She was a sporadic eater, taking small and hurried mouthfuls. It would seem odd to a Clan cat, but she didn’t often get to keep what she caught.

As she ate, she listened. Rowanstar had joined the growing group of cats beside Adderstrike. His low, rumbling voice was more soothing than her father’s but the words he spoke were enough to make Swift choke on her bite of rabbit. She watched him with wide, startled eyes. He wanted her to stay? Better yet, he wanted them both to stay? That was beyond confusing for the tiny tortoiseshell. It made sense for Polkapaw to want them, but for his Clanmates? They were scraggly, undersized and ignorant to the workings of a Clan. She didn’t understand, but somehow she hoped.

Although… Her gaze flickered back to Adderstrike, watchful and cautious of his reaction. Did that mean that their father would be staying, too?

It's like we're dreaming wide awake

WindClan

Sageleaf, for all she could be impulsive, was at least an intuitive cat. She caught on fairly quickly, one ear twisting towards Rowanstar as he spoke. Her whiskers tilted forward and twitched faintly as she looked at Adderstrike, and then with a swish of her tail the deputy turned to make her way over towards Swiftkit. Crowkit, she saw, had not yet risen to join his sister and eat, but that was fine. Let the poor little one get some last momentary rest.

Her steps were soft as she approached, but she was careful to drag her paws a couple of times to create a faint noise. Just enough that, even if Swift were looking elsewhere, her approach would be announced. Without a word Sageleaf slipped up near Swift and sat, then carefully settled down into a laying position. Like any truly content cat, she folded her legs underneath her to assume a sort of loaf form.

This also served to make the already small but leggy she-cat seem much... Smaller. Her eyes and expression were soft, and her new position brought her down to Swift's level. Sageleaf tilted her head slightly, looking across the rabbit to Swift and waiting a few moments to make sure that the younger cat was satisfied with her meal. Then the deputy gave a small nod.

"I know we haven't spoken much, Swiftkit. I'm Sageleaf. I remember when you and your siblings were born." Sageleaf spoke softly, and paused to give Swiftkit a slow blink. "I wasn't then, but I am now the deputy of WindClan. I actually have a daughter close to your age. Her name is Dawnpaw. If you stay, I'm sure you will meet her."

Sageleaf shifted slightly, trying to remain at ease. Rather than place Swiftkit so she'd have to turn her back on Adderstrike, Sageleaf had instead turned her back towards the gathering at the camp entrance. Something about that made her fur crawl, though she couldn't put it in to words. "And that's what I wanted to say. You and Crowkit both have a decision to make. I know it's a big one. I made it once."

"WindClan is where you were born. It is where your brother Polkapaw has grown. He will make his decision to stay or leave. You can also make that decision. Rowanstar and I will support whichever decision you make. I would also be glad to answer any questions you might have. We can stay over here until you're comfortable speaking with the others. Have you had enough to eat?"

This isn't how it's supposed to be!

Loner

Swift watched Sageleaf approach. She could see the deliberate dragging of the tabby's hind paw, making little rustling noises to announce her presence. Her posture was soft, head comfortably low with narrowed eyes. Swift hadn't been around many cats in her life, but a life with Adderstrike made her very good and gauging the mood of another cat.

The tortoiseshell's ears twitched and the tip of her tail curled into a delicate curve. She wasn't sure yet, but the lack of aggression or force was very welcome right now. She watched Sageleaf settle onto her belly across from the remains of the rabbit. The tabby had her paws tucked so comfortably that her fur hid every limb and every muscle and neither cat quite met the other's eyes.

Instead, she just listened as Sageleaf spoke gently about their history in WindClan. She talked about when Swift and Crow were still kits, and what her own daughter was like. She caught the slow blink and felt something warm and soft in her belly. Nervously, she blinked back. The trust between them felt new and fragile, but there was hope. Sageleaf was placing this choice in her paws, not Adderstrike's. Rowanstar, too. Her breath quickened.

Ignoring the rest of the rabbit, Swift moved cautiously, stretching a bit to sniff at Sageleaf properly and learn her scent. And then, curiousity satisfied, she drew back a little. "If we wanted to stay with Polkapaw," she began quietly, "what would happen with Adderstrike?" Swift's gaze shifted to the red tabby.

"He's... sick. He's not like he was when Mom was here." The words tumbled out in a whisper. Of all times, now was not a good time to be overheard. Her gaze locked on Polkapaw; she wished suddenly that the apprentice was not standing so close to their father. "He'll... be angry with us if Polkapaw doesn't go with him. We were supposed to lure him, I think. He thought Polkapaw would trust him if he saw us together, that he'd see us as family and follow us out."

She didn't know how to tell Sageleaf that she was worried Adderstrike would hurt someone. That no matter what Polkapaw chose, Adderstrike wasn't going to get better. She just wanted it to go away; she was anxious that something bad would happen and guilty that she couldn't make everything better. She felt lost. "I'm scared," she mewed finally. "I want to go home."

The gentle scent of moor grasses on Sageleaf's coat smelled familiar. It wasn't her mother's scent; no sweet milk scent and comforting purr to rumble in her ears, but it was definitely close enough to make her heart twist. Maybe it was the scent of WindClan, or maybe it was just Sageleaf. She didn't really think about it and she crawled in low to huddle against Sageleaf's shoulder. She curled up there, burying her face into her own paws and just hid in the relative safety of having another cat between her and her father.

Adder was careful about what information he gave to the patched she-cat, he didn't remember anything about her but she seemed the inquisitive type. Dropping his eyes and appearing ashamed he muttered a soft reply, "almost eight moons ago."

He managed to tear his eyes away from them all when Polkapaw approached them, his smile widening hopefully. Though it didn't escape his notice that his son didn't look to thrilled with the situation. Even still, the thought that his son might reject him didn't cross his mind. "I know there is a lot we haven't talked about yet but, I do hope we can talk more now."

But all traces of that smile and expression died when Rowanstar approached and began speaking. His words drilling a way under the red tabbies skin and setting a fire. It took effort to keep the sudden burning under control. Of course it was only the leaders arrogance that angered Adderstrike, for he still stubbornly believed his children would rally to his side. Perhaps at a later time he would return to teach the WindClanner a lesson but for now he needed to keep his cool, just until he and his children were out of this NightClan forsaken place.

The loner cleared his throat, a calming look passing over his face. "I am their father and I know they will be safer with me," he explained. "WindClan isn't as safe as it used to be, if it ever was." His dark eyes searched for Swift and Crow, calling out to his missing children. "Swift. Crow. Come here, my children."

When Swift moved towards her, Sageleaf kept still. She allowed the younger cat to settle up against her, her breathing steady in an attempt to breathe steadiness into Swift as well. Though it was obvious the deputy was listening, she was, for a little while, silent. Instead, once Swift had settled and buried her face in her paws, she began to gingerly groom the tortoiseshell's ears.

It was a simple, motherly gesture, one she'd done so many times for Dawnpaw. As much as it was grooming, it was also to remind someone that she was there, that she cared. As Adderstrike began to speak across the camp, Sageleaf stopped and gently bumped her chin on the top of Swift's head.

"This is your decision," she whispered softly into the younger cat's ears. Sageleaf stopped long enough to give the top of her head another lick. "It's big and it's scary, but you can't put him first. You need to decide what you want. For you."

Sageleaf withdrew just a bit, peering down at Swift. And then she leaned down once more, just to press her nose to the younger cat's cheek. "You need to lead on this one, Swiftkit. But I'll be right behind you. And whatever you decide, I and Rowanstar will support you. Okay?" Again, her voice was whisper-soft and gentle, just as her expression was softly encouraging.

Polkapaw did his best to stay out of the rising conversations, as Rowanstar approached he could feel the tensions lingering in the air. Rowanstar spoke with full confidence as he addressed his father, stating simply that it wasn't his decision. Polkapaw could only hope to have the same confidence. A glance at his father and he was able to tell he was close, close to revealing what he had been hiding since the moment he stepped on WindClan camp. He shot a determined glance toward his sister, willing her to be strong, letting her know he was there to back her up. Finally Polkapaw stepped forward, almost protectively in front of his sister, eyes locked onto his fathers. "Rowanstar is right, its not you decision, its mine and my siblings, and I choose to stay. Its my home." Polkapaw said firmly, trying to match his leaders confidence.
