He had not been able to get the wails of three kits out of his head. The heartache they felt was something he understood. He wanted to do something, anything to ease their pain, until it finally dawned on him. He knew that it would be frowned upon, yet he could not think of how he could be breaking any rules provided that he kept up with his duties. He was used to pushing himself to his limit, and for this cause, he was willing to risk it, if only so that those three might be able to sleep a bit better.

He had been told what had happened, and so he retraced the steps as best he could during the dead of night. He immediately understood why everyone hated the Thunderpath, it smelled wrong. It was too open, any moment a monster could come out of nowhere and kill you, that thought alone had him taking a step back and it was only the eyes of three kits that kept him going.

He bore with the stench and made his way towards the Twolegplace. He hunted for the lost leader, prowling the streets, asking kittypets he met along the way if they had met a she cat matching her description.

Soon it became part of his routine. He would wake before the sun rose and sit with Cranekit, who kept up a daily vigil waiting for his mother to return. Then he would go on patrol that would last until early afternoon, hunting on his way back to camp. Then he would sleep until late afternoon before slipping away to go hunting once more, and come back.

After the last meal of the day he would doze until he was sure everyone was asleep and then he would rise from where he lay next to the nursery and make his way towards the dwellings of two legs.

He had remained silent about his nightly hunts, telling no one, not even Swiftpaw or Mags about where he was going. He didn't want to get the kits' hopes up if he could find no trace of their mother.

And it seemed as if there would no trace to be found. He had hunted for her, till he was becoming familiar with twolegplace, even not coming back to camp one day just to continue his search when he thought he might have had a lead. This lead turned out to be a dead end. No one he asked had seen her, and the scents were so thick that he was unable to find any trace of the she cat.

It was following another failed day of searching that he tiredly made his way back to camp, having stopped to hunt along the way, having managed to catch a couple of skinny rabbits and a few mice. The rabbits slung over his back, and the mice hanging in his maw by their tails.

He entered camp, tired, paws aching, depositing his catch on the fresh kill pile before going to his nest that lay next to the entrance of the nursery.

Heronkit wasn't really in the market for pity nor comfort.

Despite his relative fragility, there was an encompassing calm that the child found himself in. He acted purposefully, thoughtfully, and far more considerately than any child his age had a right to. Even before Sageleaf's 'disappearance', the stony child had held himself with a certain maturity. It only made sense that with the loss of their parent, Heronkit would quickly abandon what little childishness remained.

Mostly, he was sorry that he wouldn't be fun for his siblings. Instead, he worried about where they were and what they were doing, all while eyeing his clanmates with growing suspicion.

Including the warrior who slept outside the nursery.

Heronkit had been just outside the den, like a tiny guard, and frowned at Sunfang when he came back. No words escaped his jaw though, the child content to just... stare.

"stop staring at sunfang, it's rude."' there was slight mocking edge to cranekit's words when he came up alongside heronkit, following the line of his brother's gaze to watch sunfang's return. he wasn't quite sincere in his words, driven by his foul mood to pick apart his brother's usually impeccable manners.

the tip of the tom-kit's tail twitched with barely-concealed anxiousness as he watched the golden warrior deposit his catch on the freshkill pile. then, predictably, sunfang's paws turned toward them.

cranekit barreled forward to greet the older cat, who'd become like an older brother or uncle figure. it had happened quickly, already in the beginning stages when sageleaf went missing. his mother's disappearance only served to fuel his budding relationship with the older tom, forging a sturdy link in their relationship. "heya sunfang!" cranekit's tone was forcibly bright when he greeted the warrior, no trace of the shortness he'd spoken to heronkit with. "you look tired, did you catch anything big today?" he peered past him, to the freshkill pile, then asked hopefully, "another eagle?"

Sunfang had found nothing of Sageleaf though he had searched high and low for her in twolegplace, he felt it was too early to give up. He yearned to tell the kits he was searching that they had never recovered the body, yet as he looked into the eyes of Heronkit he could not bear to give them false hope when he didn't know if there was any hope to be had. He could only hope that when the truth came to the surface, they would forgive him for withholding his intentions. He could not bear the heart broken look on their faces and the knowledge that he had been the one to put it there.

Heronkit ever the shy thing had withdrawn into himself of late, not even shy anymore just a hollow shell of his former self. Cranekit was a bit more boisterous though one could still see the fresh pain in his eyes, he had tried to carry on like a warrior. He had become fond of all three of Sageleaf's kits.

He almost chuckled, though it came out as a rumble deep in his chest when Cranekit bounced forward looking for news of his hunt. The mention of an eagle had him rolling his shoulders that bore scars from where the eagle had gripped him tight as if raising him from perdition (hint hint, what reference is this to?).

"Not today youngling, just a few rabbits and mice. What about you two? How are you faring this day?" he said in thick accent. The look in his eyes had no pity in them, for he did not pity the kits, he felt a kinship with them, for he too had lost his mother at a young age, though under different circumstances.

"He should stop sitting outside the nursery then."

Countered Heronkit, with zero intention to actually speak to Sunfang. It wasn't like he ... wanted to be mean or anything, but the way that his lungs froze up and stuttered whenever anyone but Granite or Crane were around made him despise the constant guard at the nursery. It felt like eyes. Eyes, constantly digging into his skin, constantly worming under his flesh and pricking him. Constant. Neverending.

He hated the others and their many eyes.

But he didn't speak anymore, frowning at Sunfang and not answering the other's query about the day. Why would he?

disappointment swept across cranekit's face. it hit him all at once, forcing his head to bow low between his drooping shoulders. "s'all right," cranekit shrugged, casting a glance over his shoulder to where heronkit hesitated just in his shadow. "heronkit's being boring again..." he muttered under his breath, the words meant more for himself than sunfang.

but the sullenness disappeared just as quickly as it hit him. the slate-grey kitten perked up, straightening out in a quick jerk of his head. green eyes bright, he looked past sunfang to where the freshkill pile nestled in a shallow scoop in the ground. "do you think we could have the rabbit you brought? pleaaaaaaaaase sunfang? i'm sooooooo hungry, i could eat the whole thing by myself!"
